Now with 4k, 8k and UHD support (10 and 12 bit video),etc..
VLC 3.0 "Vetinari" is a new major update of VLC.
VLC 3.0 activates hardware decoding by default, to get 4K and 8K playback!
It supports 10bits and HDR
VLC supports 360 video and 3D audio, up to Ambisoncics 3rd order
Allows audio passthrough for HD audio codecs
Can stream to Chromecast devices, even in formats not supported natively
Can play Blu-Ray Java menus: BD-J
VLC supports browsing of local network drives and NAS

Looks good, but i can't get the menu to be played with UHD backups.
At first it asked me to get java (which i did), and now it says it can read it and i should try without the menu option (it works without it).
Anyone tried and managed to get it working ?

VLC3 still stutters on my MacBook Pro dual core i7 (2017 model). On the other hand, IINA (Mac only) plays 4k MKV rips with no trouble at all. It has hardware decoding of HEVC. It is now my go-to app for playback.

Ironically my mac pro 2013 is playing back 24fps UHD movies with no frame skipping at all, but brand new imacs with hardware support built into the Intel chips are skipping frames.
This is loads better than VLC 2.0. I couldn't play UHD disks at all.

I tried it the day they released it, still can't play as smoothly as MPV or MPC.

I have latest VLC 3.03 on a I7-6700K with nVidia GTX-970 and when I play ,y 4K HDR rips I get a black video, but sound is fine, these rips play fine on my Shied to my 4K TV. My PC monitors are not 4K HDR, but I would think VLC would scale it and display it without HDR.

FYI - If you are after a PC SW player that supports BD Menus (both BD and UHD) have a look at JRiver Media Center. Working well.

I second this. It works very well indeed.
