Unable to read Warner Brothers 66GB Discs

Post by oliverhallam » Sun Feb 02, 2025 4:50 pm

I've recently picked up the Warner Brothers 100th anniversary set (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Warner-Anniver ... 0BTDZS5NF/), but I'm having trouble reading some of the discs.

I have a PIONEER BDR-US04 drive, which has worked fine for every other 4K disc I own (over 100).

For some of the discs in the set (probably about 10 of them), when I put them in the drive it whirrs and clunks for a while until it decides no disc is inserted. For most of them, removing and inserting the disc a few times works (and pushing down hard on the disc when I insert it seems to help but I don't know if that is just me imagining it). However, a couple of the discs I can't get to be recognised at all no matter how many times I insert it.

I have noticed that it's just the 66GB discs that are struggling - the 100GB discs work every time. Perhaps the layers are slightly thicker than they should be?

The discs all play flawlessly in my PS5, so I don't think I can justify returning them for being faulty - and the fact it's every 66GB disc means I will probably have the same problem with a replacement set.

Has anyone else seen this?

Perhaps my drive is at fault? But the fact it's working fine for other dual layer discs makes me think not.

I thought the Pioneer came recommended by this forum as one of the most compatible drives, but is there another model I should consider complementing it with for stubborn incompatible discs?

Wash the discs with warm water and liquid soap. Dry with a paper towel and then wipe with a microfiber cloth as used for cleaning glasses. Try again.

I have followed your instructions to the letter but sadly that's not fixed it.

Then get the disc replaced.

You think it's a disc problem then? Even though all the discs are playing fine on my PS5?

Here are common things we hear said all the time about why it can't possibly be a disc issue:

1) The disc "looks pristine" and can't possibly be the problem
2) I can play the disc on X so ii can't possibly be the problem

1...human eyes are hardly enough to see microscopic issues on a disc. How it looks is pointless. Besides the fact that a large majority of "looks pristine but won't rip" issues are a type of oil residue from the packaging. Let's just say these discs aren't exactly of the highest quality manufacturing standards these days.

2...I'm sure it can. That makes 0 difference as to whether you can rip a disc or not. Why? Several reasons. UHD players and the PS5 will skip over errors when encountered. You may or may not notice when watching. But here's the most important part that people miss. Your PS5 is not reading EVERY bit off the disc like MakeMKV would be. And MakeMKV requires it to be perfect or it'll throw errors and not just ignore them. So while it's nice that your PS5 can "read the disc" it's completely irrelevant in this case.

Replace the dsic.
