BU40N 4K UHD issue

Post by JabberJaw » Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:49 pm

Hi,

I've followed the guides and have confirmed successful flash of a BU40N (S05JH) and backup of a standard BR.

Here's the CLI command I used on MacOS.

Code: Select all

./makemkvcon f -d '/IOBDServices/551BD012' -f /Users/Jabber/Desktop/Bluray_Player/sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /Users/Jabber/Desktop/Bluray_Player/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin
When I put a 4K UHD BR in, it simply spins up re-tries, then ejects the BR.

Have I done something wrong, or am I missing something?

I've seen these:
viewtopic.php?t=28323
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=33965&p=152457&hil ... JH#p152457

Here's the MKV details:

Code: Select all

S device name: /dev/rdisk5
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.04
Serial number: -----------
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 11:42
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 63

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.04
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
I notice the instructions say "BU40N on any Firmware directly to > BU40N 1.03MK (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634#:~:text=BU40 ... N%201.03MK)
So I tried that, but it didn't recognise UHD, so updated to the 1.04

Is it worth trying the LG firmware? Seems like no other BU40Ns are listed in the UHD Guide, or are they just all LG but rebranded BU40Ns?

Thank you for your help :)

Have you only tried with a single 4K UHD?

The recommendation for 1.03MK firmware is because empirically that's considered the best firmware for BU40N drives.

The LG BU40N gets rebranded quite a lot. As I understand it, for the most part these days, if a drive isn't a Pioneer, it is a LG made drive, regardless of what is silkscreened on the front. There are a few drives that have rebadged Pioneer drives in them, but not many.

Clean the disc before trying again. Also, put the disc in and let the OS initialize it before opening MakeMKV software.
Cheers :D

One of the main issues seemed to simply be the external caddy's plate was getting caught.

After I fixed that it ran with no problems! Weird...
I currently have 1x LibreDrive for sale.
Tested and fully working with 4K UHD BR.
