UHD copied but will not convert

Post by Delthala » Sat Mar 06, 2021 2:45 pm

I recently bought a BW16D1HT drive that had original 3.10 firmware on it. When I got it, it wouldn't even read the disc. I then found a post on here with an aut program that would change the firmware so I used it to go to 3.10MK after that Make MKV would read the disc and will copy it but any time I try to change the format of the video file from .m2ts by putting it in byte copy or the like it will say that it cannot load the file. if I open the disc in other copy programs it will get stuck at 4% then say fail to load the disc. Can anyone help me with this? I'm slightly lost and just want to be able to copy the video file to Store on my NAS to be able to stream it to my TV when our Wireless internet goes down. Sorry, We live in BFE so I try to remain redundant in terms of having internet access. as for post rip i do not understand what you mean? I thought this converted to MKV and removed encryption so I could host it on my server? am I sorely mistaken? I was wanting copies without any loss at all because storage isnt a problem.

If you want to work with m2ts files, you should be using the BACKUP button on MakeMKV to create a directory containing the BD structure.

If you use Open->Make MKV, the m2ts files will become MKV files, and that is probably confusing your post-rip software, if it is expecting m2ts.

I would like to convert to MKV for storage purposes so I prefer not to work with the M2ts files as I run plex which I believe does not allow those files. that being said I tried to convert Donnie brasco over and this is what I get in the logs. Is my drive jacked up? It almost looks as if that is the case.

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00032.m2ts' at offset '18239975424'
Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom0' at offset '18239975424'
You have a read error on part of the disk, and the drive is trying so hard to read it, the operating system thinks it has gone off-line.

Using backup mode, this causes the whole backup to fail. Using Open->Make MKV, any title that uses this portion of 00032.m2ts will fail.

It may be easier to read the disk at a slower speed, but start with giving it a good cleaning. The "if you are experiencing errors" topic in the Bluray forum has information on different cleaning methods.

Generally, this should be your workflow. Put the disc in your optical drive and let MakeMKV 'rip' the movie into a .mkv file. If storage really isn't a problem, at this point, stop. Copy the .mkv file into your NAS and watch it.

A blu-ray or UHD disc usually has multiple titles. For example, one for the movie, one for the FBI warning, one for the trailer you're forced to watch before the movie starts, etc. A .mkv file can only contain one title. As such, the general advice is to rip the biggest title, which is probably the movie. The more discs you rip, the more you'll come to understand the ins and outs of how discs are arranged. For example, a lot of Disney movies have 3 titles that are the movie. One title has the movie titles and credits in English, one is usually Spanish, and one is usually French (at least in North America).

Once you have the movie in a .mkv file, if it is a standard hi-def blu-ray (or a DVD), if you want to compress the movie again to save some disk space, Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr) is a popular tool. If you want to compress a UHD… well, that's complicated because of HDR and/or Dolby Vision.

As Woodstock has pointed out, sometimes when MakeMKV is reading the optical disc to make a .mkv file, the drive has a read error and the rip fails. A standard blu-ray player is designed to ignore read errors (which happen all the time) and just keep on truckin'. You might notice it as a glitch or stutter when you watch. MakeMKV is reading movie discs and trying to read every byte of data correctly. This is relatively hard to do. A UHD disc is the same physical size as a CD. From a computer data perspective, a CD holds about 700 MB of data. A UHD can hold as much as 100GB of data. That's more than 100 times more data in the same physical space. Reading all that data back is a delicate thing and a lot harder to do than reading the audio data on a CD.
When the optical drive has a read failure during a rip, the general advice is to gently clean the disc and try again. Often even small bits of dust or nearly invisible films on the disc make it harder for your optical drive to read the disc correctly.
