1917 4k UHD disc won't initialize

Post by chubafelix » Mon Feb 15, 2021 12:37 am

Hello, the above stated disc won't initialize in my BD drive on my PC. In fact, it wont initialize in Samsung BD player either. I was able to play it from XBOX ONE S.
What do I need to rip this disc? I have version 1.15.4.

You haven't indicated whether or not you have a 4K-capable drive. If you don't, the disk won't be seen by the drive, operating system, or MakeMKV.

I was not aware that the resolution of the video has any barring on the ATAPI BD drive in my PC. I could understand that the bitrate is higher then 1080p BD disc but initialization of the disc and communication between BD drive and PC has nothing to do with bitrate. So, why would I need to have a "4K" BD drive?

The physical disk format for a UHD is higher density than Bluray, even a "BDXL" drive. If your drive is from 2015 or before, it won't be able to read a UHD disk.

Some LATE 2015 drives had UHD capability; If it is an LG drive with a "SVC NS50" marking on the label, it may be able to do UHD.

When you start MakeMKV, you should have a part of the Info window that will list what your drive is capable of, along with the firmware version you have installed.

Hi, thanks very much. I also researched this further and understood that 4k UHD BD is a different spec then BD. Given that information, there is nothing specific in the drive implementation for supporting Dolby Vision, right? So, once I get a drive capable of 4k UHD, I would be able to initialize both HDR10 and Dolby Vision discs in MakeMKV?
Is there a specific model of LG or LineON you can recommend that is known to work?
Thank you.

There is a topic at the top of this forum that discusses UHD-capable drives, how to identify them, how to flash their firmware when needed, when NOT to flash them, etc.

Lite-On disks are typically Pioneer hardware; there are no UHD-friendly Pioneer drives right now. Some will work with official UHD software, but not for ripping.

UHD capability shouldn't be THAT hard to find, since Google and other search engines hit this forum several times per day.
