ASUS BW16DHT and Hobbit 4k?

Post by Plermpel » Sun Jan 31, 2021 1:03 pm

Hello,

I recently bought a BluRay Drive and the Hobbit and LotR 4k BluRay (German Versions) since I am a huge fan, allready owned the old BluRays but since I sold my PS4 and haven't got a PS5 yet I wanted to watch those Discs on my PC (If only I had known...).
At first I was a complete noob and was wondering why my Drive didn't read the stupid discs at all, I expected that I just need to buy some software and done.
After a while of googling I found out that MakeMKV is basicly the only way to playback UHD BluRays on PC, so I bought. I allready flashed the firmware of my drive but
I refuses to read the discs 99% of the time, I managed to watch the first Hobbit (Extended) after about an hour of Trying and wanted to watch the second one just now, but still no luck, I git the disc to get regnorized in "My PC" about three times but as soon as I try to watch it throu MPC-HC or even rip it, it fails to read again?
Is the ASUS drive just bananas? Do I need another drive? Can't really belive that my discs are the issue, they are brand new out of the box.
I'd love if someone could help me troubleshoot this, or at least tell me that it's just normal that the german version of Hobbit and LotR 4k are just a terrible experience to read.

More information is needed.

First, have you read the first message of Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2021?

When you load a disk into MakeMKV, what does it say about LibreDrive status in the right hand window?

Clean the disc
The asus does not see UHD discs by default so it is flashed to the right firmware if it was working at all
Buy a UHD drive from the guide and how to video maker: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 20&t=17831

Like I said I allready watched the first part yesterday, so the flashing should be ok.
Allthough it says unpached, my drive came with version 3.10.
I aslo had the patched version 3.10 on it but it did not work at all.
When I insert the disc and it doesn't work, I can hear the drive searching for information for a few minutes until it gives up and spits out the disc.

The right side of MKV says:
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 3.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
It seems to be just pure luck I tried it about 60 times now and suddenly it worked, I just riped the disc succesfully.
Inserted the third movie and it worked instantly, but I am 100% shure if I reinsert the disc now, it will stop working for the next 60 times or so.

Clean the disc
The disks are all brand new and never touched before, there isn't even a light sign of any dirt on them, but the drive behaves like they would be covered in fat and ust.

And yet, lots of "clean never touched fresh from the package" disks are covered with a chemical film they pick up from the packaging with affects the ability of a laser to focus on microscopic holes. It can be VERY hard to see, until you clean a portion of the disk and can see the contrast.

You should listen and clean the disc. The films on UHD discs are invisible but prevent the drive to read well from them.

Just cleaned the disc with some isopropanol alohol and a micro fibre cloth and got nothing out of it than a few microscratches that are now on my disc...

You should try to rip to folder with Makemkv and post what Makemkv reports through that process. Not just view the movie. Only then we can see what's the problem.
