Back to the Future won't read on my ASUS drive

#1 Post by riprunn » Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:26 pm

Anyone else having an issue with this? I'll have some discs that just won't read in my drive. I bought one box set, and disc 1 wouldn't read. I exchanged it for another, checked the disc for any imperfections, and it still won't read at all in the drive. Am I missing something.

I do have the latest version, but that still shouldn't stop it from reading the disc at an OS level.

Quick addendum: BttF 1 and 2 UHD discs won't read, but part 3 will.

We need a little more information aside from “it does read” to try and better advise.

Any error(s) returned by MakeMKV and/or its error log? If so, can you post them here?

Is it just returning a “no disc inserted” warning?

Has this drive been previously flashed to any other firmware?

Can you post your drive info as returned by the MakeMKV app?

Yes I had major issues.

With my BTTF3 disc I had to use BH16NS60 1.02 MK firmware and I had to remove the speed control 0=99 in the registry.
BTTF 1 & 2 read OK with speed control 0=99 but I had to power down the drive inbetween discs or the drive would make chugging noises and lock up.
I also had the same problem with the Harry Potter collection.
Cleaning the discs made no difference.

ASUS BW-16D1HT running the 3.02 firmware. I've been ripping UHD disks for a while with this drive.

The drive doesn't see the disc at all. Make MKV will show that's trying to load a disc, and then eventually just says no disc inserted. This is also on the OS side as well.

BttF 3 reads just fine. It shows up at the OS level and in Make MKV.

It has not been flashed to any other firmware since I purchased it and did the Flash down to the friendly version.

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Manufacturer: ASUS

Links to a Youtube video. Towards the end of that video MakeMKV returns information in the bottom pane regarding the disc.

Are you getting that same or similar output on your end?

Or does it not get that far at all?

Chances are you've not set any speed commands if you don't know. Its under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MakeMKV
I would try a crossflash to LG BH16NS60 1.02mk and see if you can see the disc. you can always flash back to what you had using the Asus flasher and latest firmware pack.

It doesn't even get that far. Just straight up says No Disc, as if nothing is in the drive at all.

Here is a video of what happens when I insert BttF 1 UHD.

Probably doesn't need to be said but make sure you right click and select "run as administrator" when opening MakeMKV.

Never needed to do this before, but I have for this.

Also, it's not just Make MKV. It's not reading the disc at all or registering at the OS level for Parts 1 and 2. Part 3 reads and registers in the OS and Make MKV just fine.

It’s times like this where you need an LG drive to try them in. Reflashing the ASUS wouldn’t hurt I suppose but I’m guessing it’s the usual “first run of a new release resulting in a lot of QC issues”.

I have an ASUS drive that I'd previous flashed to the LG firmware, per the instructions on this site.

I had the same problem. I tried Bttf 1 multiple times and it wouldn't read.

I downgraded to 15.2, and I'm suddenly able to read the disc now. Not sure if this is just coincidence though.

Had the same issue here but with BTTF 2. Tried downgrading and that did not work. Finally got it to read by removing the speed control (0=99) in the registry.

I assume I'm correct in thinking that as long as it ends with success then its been read correctly and I can just take note of any read errors in the log?
