Star Wars A New Hope 4K Alien Subtitles

Post by Boldlygo »

Just got for Christmas copies of Star Wars IV, V & VI on 4K in Canada - Ultimate Collector's Edition. I have some experience ripping subtitle tracks but for the life of me cannot get Episode IV to rip the Alien subtitles at all. I have searched through this board and with Google for solutions - maybe there is none?
Anyways, I always get a "Forced subtitles track #5 turned out to be empty and was removed from output file" error no matter which subtitle track I choose. I have created a 'backup file' so I can play with this.
When I open the 4K files, I get 4 copies of the movie to choose from - 2 are 51.5g and 2 are 51.6g. They all show only one English subtitle track, two French, two Spanish and two Japanese. I've tried ripping them all, changing the MKV flag from 'd' to 'df', but nothings works. HELP!? How do I get the Alien subtitle track to load if MakeMKV keeps removing them?

Star Wars is one set of titles that does not always use subtitles for alien speech. When it's important, the "subtitle" is actually put in the video stream, rather than a subtitle track. When it's not, it is ignored. You'll see the same thing in Star Trek... Forced subtitles are usually blank.

When dealing with something in a foreign language, there is a larger chance that there will be forced subtitles, but... that said... you are more likely to find a separate subtitle track for that, rather than flagged subtitles. I'm ripping a few hundred disks right now, and encountering many different ways that subtitles are done.
