Hi I am a long time user but I have come across the avatar 4k blu ray and could not read it properly so I decided to get a replacement and piece the files together and hopefully have a working encrypted backup that I can decrypt with the files I created with the disc doing a full backup in makemkv but having "encrypt files" unchecked. I have the full file structure encrypted and the makemkv folder with the discattd.dat and I can't figure out how to make a decrypted backup from now nor how to open these files in make mkv. The second disc was scratched severely as well but not in the same places as the first disc, so I got the missing files from this one to complete the first backup.
I copied all the files from windows explorer so they are not encrypted at all but as I said I have the information I believe I need from makemkv to decrypt these files.
I have searched all forums here and otherwise on how to make this work but makemkv will not let me choose the discattd.dat file to open nor do I see it in the "files > open" within makemkv. I tried placing it in various folders to no avail and there seems to be no info on this problem anywhere.
I also tried making the encrypted files into an iso in imgburn into UDF iso format but makemkv won't open that iso when I have it mounted as a virtual drive within windows explorer.
Any guidance?

If you copy the files directly from the disc in windows explorer they are still encrypted.Anonymous222935 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 12:36 amHi I am a long time user but I have come across the avatar 4k blu ray and could not read it properly so I decided to get a replacement and piece the files together and hopefully have a working encrypted backup that I can decrypt with the files I created with the disc doing a full backup in makemkv but having "encrypt files" unchecked. Try opening the index.bdmv file from the encrypted folder in MakeMKV.

Re: Have encrypted backup and Discattd.dat, can't open files
Essentially I'm trying to piece together two badly scratched discs by file structure (the first disc had 2 damaged files) and then read them with makemkv, and I'm not exactly sure if this is supposed to be done.
I'm collecting them unencrypted in windows explorer and then trying to use makemkv to decrypt them. For some reason copying from windows explorer is easier on the scratches than reading from makemkv or any other tools I have. In my experience doing this in the past with regular blu rays, this kind of reading tends to have errors in it such as a black screen for a few seconds on a vikings blu ray disc in that series that makemkv would not read directly. I'll gladly take a few black seconds instead of not reading that episode at all. Anyways, back to the avatar 4k discs...
I have made some progress on my problem so far in the last couple of hours. I was confused between discattd.dat and discatt.dat, discattd.dat is from a backup with "encrypt files" checked and discattd.dat is from a backup with "encrypt files" unchecked.
After I had my folder structure "/AACS, /BDMV and /CERTIFICATE" from copying files in windows between the two discs (I had to copy 2 files from this new disc since those were unrecoverable from the first disc) I started an unencrypted backup in makemkv to see what the folder structure is and what the difference was, and I see "/BDMV, /CERTIFICATE and /MAKEMKV" and I see the /AACS within /MAKEMKV must be the "key" to things.
So I removed the /AACS folder and moved /MAKEMKV to the main folder structure and then tried to open it in makemkv via the "index.bdmv" file and it opened in makemkv and started processing the titles but I see

(I removed many multiples of the errors for space) and so on just for those two m2ts files. Only about 3 problem parts for each file. The strange part about those two files are they are from the second disc and everything else is from the first disc. So I tried starting the unencrypted backup on the second disc to see if there's something different in the makemkv folder compared to the first disc and they are the exact same.
So I'm stuck now and I'm going to have to return this movie again because of their bad packaging.

Re: Have encrypted backup and Discattd.dat, can't open files
If you copied the files with Windows Explorer then the stream files are also encrypted with bus encryption (all 4K discs use bus encryption). You will need to re-rip the disc with bus encryption disabled (via libredrive or some other method).

Yes, true. Forgot about bus encryption.
You will have to rerip. Why not check the decryption box in MakeMKV? At the very least ensure libredrive is enabled in MakeMKV before copying files in explorer.
Cheers

Re: Have encrypted backup and Discattd.dat, can't open files
Your lengthy descriptions are muddled up. There is a "decrypt" option to check or uncheck, not an "encrypt" option. Throughout your messages you are mixing up "encrypt" and "decrypt" -- exact opposites. And repeat those confusions throughout, so it is unclear what you did. (In these forums, people often get the two terms backward, which seems odd to me. In other words, do you mean "X" or "the opposite of X". It matters.)Anonymous222935 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 12:36 amthe files I created with the disc doing a full backup in makemkv but having "encrypt files" unchecked.
Also, vague references to "removed the /AACS folder", etc. without explaining from where (removed the folder from what set of files?) further confuses things.
Did you first run MakeMKV to have it write to the optical drive's RAM and allow the drive to read data without bus encryption?
What drive did you use? LG drives with their original firmware handle read errors by not reporting errors and instead delivering phony data. So a copy operation in Windows Explorer using an LG optical drive may complete without your receiving any error messages, but with erroneous data in the copy.

I meant having decrypt enabled or disabled, I did mess that up.kaysee wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 7:17 pmYour lengthy descriptions are muddled up. The /aacs folder being the one from just plainly copying over the 4k blu ray's files from the disc to a folder on a hard drive. My drive is an LG WH14NS40 with original firmware dated to 2115-12-11 so it's definitely original.
Yes I noticed that copying from windows explorer was usually better for scratched discs than makemkv, so I'm probably getting read errors in the files sometimes - but the files play fine on my plex server on discs I've done this in the past for. And makemkv also reads better with "decrypt files" unchecked for some reason as well - on scratched discs. I'm just trying everything because I'm in a bad situation with severe circular scratches even on my second disc of avatar 4k.
Someone said I should have libre drive enabled which I'm thinking was my problem with the files from the second disc, since I copied everything from the first disc when makemkv was open and libre drive was running. But my problem now is that I can not open this second disc properly in makemkv to get to the title selection so that libre drive is running. I can only copy while the disc titles are being processed and by the time it gives me an error I don't have enough time to copy this 16GB m2ts file. It hangs for about 30 minutes trying to process titles and then the drive times out and I have to reboot it. It was reading fine during the exploration phase of processing titles but it was thrashing my drive severely until it timed out.
