Errors while ripping UHD disc

Post by fabiolanza »

Hi,

I am ripping my LOTR UHD discs. It went fine through the first 5 discs, but it's giving me the following errors when ripping disc #6.

My drive is the Verbatim BDR-UD04 which is a LibreOffice friendly. The discs are brand new out of the box, super clean. I don't understand the error. In a different post it was suggested power issues or speed issues. However, my drive does not have a power input, it's only fed via the USB-C interface, which is connected directly to my motherboard. Is it possible to change the read speed of the drive for UHD ripping? I did not find this option in the interface.

Any advise is mostly welcome. I feel quite stupid now having spent money for the drive, the discs, and I am not able to watch the movies. I don't have a physical Bluray player, so it's quite frustrating.

Thanks

It is important to remember that a disc can be clean enough to appear visually flawless whilst also being completely unreadable due to manufacturing issues. Some drives are more tolerant of lower quality discs but this can vary a lot between samples of the same drive model.

The usual advice regarding ripping issues with slim/portable drives is to use a powered USB hub. This can mitigate the issues certain motherboards and laptops can have with meeting the high power requirements of certain drives. I just checked my Verbatim 43888 (BDR-UD04) and the bottom sticker notes that it requires 5V/3A. This might not sound crazy for a USB-C device but it is enough to have the occasional issue on marginal ports.

MakeMKV offers options for speed control with LG & Asus drives but I don't believe there is an equivalent for Pioneer drives like your BDR-UD04.

Unfortunately even with a powered USB hub your drive may still not be able to rip that problematic disc. If the disc is bad enough it is possible that no drive can actually rip it. Before you buy a powered USB hub or a 5.25" UHD drive I'd recommend exchanging your discs with the retailer.

As soon as I read LOTR, I thought, uuggghhhh....

The LOTR boxset is notoriously bad for ripping. Using the search you wil find many threads about this boxset. The manufacturing process of this set must have been pretty bad.

First thing to try is a very thorough cleaning of the troublesome disc. Use soapy water and a microfiber cloth. Dry with another microfiber cloth and let it air dry overnight before trying to rip it again.

Most people have ended up ripping whatever discs they could then return/exchange the set for a new one and then rip the discs that wouldn't work in the first set.
Cheers :D
