Dune 2021 4k UHD uber slow read rates 1/3 way through

Post by architekt »

I'm using 1.16.7 on Windows 10x64. The disc is Dune 2021 4K UltraHD Dolby Vision/Atmos from Amazon US. I ordered the drive pre-flashed from Billy who graciously tested it out/verified it and sent it ASAP. I previously tried this with my Buffalo BRUHD-PU3-BK flashed with the BU40N 1.03 firmware, 100% same results. This current drive I'm not sure on the brand but it's also a BU40N, it's the one Billy sells. This is what is displayed for drive and LibreDrive info:

Drive Information
OS device name: G:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: MO7L91F5411
Firmware date: 2116-12-20 15:28
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.00
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

I'm using a brand-new untouched disc from Amazon. Just for good measure, I cleaned it with a brand-new microfiber cloth.

Note that the following is the same for both the previous drive and the brand new one, exactly:

I first tried to make a decrypted ISO. It got to roughly 29GB or so, then the rip speed dropped off from about 19-26M/s to about 119kb/s and kept making seeking noises for all of eternity and never increased in speed after that. I let it go for 16 hours, it got to about 33GB ripped, then ejected the disc with a hash verification failed error.

This is also the 2nd disc I've bought, just in case there was a problem with the first, since before attempting to rip the first I had played it in my blu ray player a few times (a dedicated high-def player, not the same one I use to rip, it's attached to my TV). I wanted to eliminate maybe a possible issue with say scratching or smudging or something. Plus I had a friend that really wanted a copy and couldn't afford it so figured may as well try a 2nd disc. With this 2nd disc, I didn't touch it, just straight away went and cleaned it with a new microfiber cloth and put it in the brand new unopened/unused drive. I still get the same problem trying to do a decrypted ISO at about the same position with the same ultra slow read rates and sounds of excessive seeking also at about the same 29GB mark, but it reads fast until then.

I'm now trying to just rip the movie itself with audio/subtitles as I read that MakeMKV can now handle Dolby Vision without having to jump through the previous hoops with making ISOs and muxing etc. It reads fast, 19-26M/s, with occasional seeks dropping to low 100kb/s rates for maybe 20s or so then picks back up. But when I get to about 23GB or so, it just starts once again, permanently reading at an ultra-slow speed of roughly 115K/s. Forever. Is this just some limitation with this disc? I wouldn't be surprised if they did some crafty copyright prevention techniques with it given how high profile the film is. Anyway, not sure what else to try. I had debug logging enabled and the log said this before I ultimately gave up, not wanting to wait the increasing number of days that was being estimated to rip it:

It's likely just a crappy run of discs. You may have done this, but on poorly authored discs, a few drops of dish detergent and then wiping with a clean microfiber cloth (center to edge!) may help you get through it (albeit slowly).

One other thing to try - when I've run into the occasional disc where the drive displays excessive seek noise, completely powering the PC off (i.e removing the power cord) will sometimes get things going again. However, these circumstances sound a bit different than yours, as when I've experienced this, it's as if the drive gets locked into a reduced functionality mode after a number of rips and displays the excessive seeking even on discs that previously worked fine. That said, it's free, and worth a shot.

Otherwise, return to Amazon again, since it doesn't cost you anything but time and inconvenience. I'd say wait further into your return window, however, to possibly get a disc from a different run. Alternatively, get your money back and purchase from another vendor like Best Buy.

Touching base again with a positive update: Today I decided to check if there was an update to MakeMKV from the version I was using previously (1.16.7 as originally stated) and sure enough there was. I tried ripping it again with 1.17.1 and it ripped at max speed with no errors or problems at all!
