I have a WH16NS40 drive flashed to 1.02 firmware. I’m using a recent version of MakeMKV, installed within the last month.
I’ve used this drive to successfully rip a few UHDs, including the Avenger infinity War and End Game discs.
But when I insert Valerian UHD, and open MakeMKV, I get the crunchy searching noise from the drive and it generally doesn’t read. Occasionally, MakeMKV will at least recognize the disc enough to get me a track listing, but from there is fails to rip. Thoughts?
Cannot read Valerian

get new disk
clean drive laser
get new drive
in that order
Valerian is a BD-100 all the other disks you mention are BD-66 much easier to read than a BD-100
my guess is the laser needs cleaning since LGs clean room is apparently a joke i have fixed many drives that don't see bd-100s this way i take them apart and use some alcohol on lasers

Re: Cannot read Valerian
Thanks. That’s a shame. I just looked up a list of BD-100s and there are several other movies on that list I was hoping to rip.
Tried cleaning the disc but it looks pristine. I’m pretty hesitant to take the drive apart.
Being on the cutting edge can be frustrating sometimes. I guess I should have bought a different drive.

Re: Cannot read Valerian
not really all of the drives are made by LG that rip UHD the asus is a rebranded LG and all of them are luck of the draw.
out of 282 drives i have had about 42 defective right out of the box that's like a 15% failure rate but it feels like so much more mostly because i put like 3 hours of testing into each drive and screenshotting
like i said try a new replacement disk first if cleaning did not fix it.

Re: Cannot read Valerian
I’ll try a different disc. But I appreciate you letting me know about the difference between BD-66 and BD-100. That seems to be a very logical reason why I would be able to play the Avengers IW and EG, Alita, and Thor with no problem, but no luck at all with Valerian.
