Is there a reason some 4Ks don't load menus on VLC?

Post by jbrip »

I don't know where the issue lies. I use makemkv latest version (1.18.2) and VLC x64 latest version (3.0.20 Vetinari). Makemkv integration is checked for VLC. I have the latest Java with the old versions JRE 8 and JavaSE 12.

The issue is menus do not play for 4K UHDs. They work in some 4K discs and some blu-ray discs. Its random what it plays and does not play.

For example, "Communion" 1989 bluray disc does not play MENUs. And its a blu-ray.

Secondly, the movie "The Descent" 2005 4K UHD disc does not play MENUs nor does John Carpenters "The Thing" 4k UHD play the MENUs at all.

However majority of blurays and other 4K UHDs play MENUs just fine.

Does anyone know why this is? I tried uninstalling Makemkv and VLC simultaneously and reinstalling them without any hope or answers. Even researching on google and on this forum. Can anyone help with this? Is this error makemkvs or VLCs ?

Errors on these show:

Code: Select all

"Blu-ray error:
Playback with BluRay menus failed"

"Blu-ray error:
Failed to start bluray playback. Please try without menu support.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///E:/'. Check the log for details."
This is driving me insane!!!

I think some menu's are simply more complex and can't be loaded.

Guys theres got to be someone that knows what to do?

So am I stuck for those 4K and Blurays to just ignore? I need to be able to play it on VLC or some program so I know what to re-name the files and extras on the movie. The main movie will be easy to name since its the largest file. But for the extra features and detailed commentary. I won't know what to name them. They''ll just be left un-named with their default "so and so_t01.mkv" since I can't view it on a player (which I thought VLC would take care of) failed.

Should I take this issue to VLC or whats going on ? I get that the menu thing may be complex for some movies. Is there a fix or way around this at all? I'm thinking of wiping out my computer and reinstalling windows because I know there has to be a glitch some where but I can't figure it out. Surely there has to be someone out here that has the same issue? Anyone got John Carpenters The Thing 4K or the Descent movie in 4K that just doesn't load the menus? How am I suppose to name them? I do not own a 4K player that being costly at 200-600 dollars. I just have a pioneer that I got from billycar. The only way around this would be to buy a 4K player at $200-600 which I don't have right now. This is driving me nuts. I never thought menus would not budge when backing up 4k bluray movie and freely being able to organize them. Ughhh!

No there is not a fix. Not all menu's can be played. Try using something else like plex or jriver.

Why do you need menu's? Just play the files themselves then you will know what each of them are.

Personally, on Windows, BluRay/UHD menus usually only work at all for me if I use Java 8 (or having the path to it set in the JAVA_HOME variable).

I just clean swiped my Windows PC. For some odd reason, I kept uninstalling VLC, JAVA and MakeMKV and no matter how much I removed and restarted my PC to make VLC load UHD menus. Nothing worked! I suspected something was off and I got annoyed (as you see my previous post lol). I decided to take the day to wipe my PC. I installed all the needed apps and now miraculously VLC plays UHDs with menus.I do not know what caused this issue. But now things work. :D

What do you mean by that? Did you do a format?
I have 180 UHDs and I just encountered my first UHD menu that doesn't play with VLC. I get to the menu screen, but no menu or buttons or anything.

I'm quite annoyed.
Does anyone know if this disc has a known issue with it menu playback on pcs?
I see I have the latest java installed.
I can have access to the special features manually in MPC by playing each playlist, but I wanted to be able to have access to the menu too.. :(

By the way, makemkv doesn't have access to the deleted scenes:

Same with Leawo, doesn't show the deleted scenes in the playlist:

But I can have access to them by manually playing the appropriate playlist in MPC.

I have no idea what causes menu's to not play in VLC. A clean slate (re-installed windows) fixed the issue for me. Doesn't seem the community has much help in this scenario. I'm guessing its a Windows issue rather than makemkv. However, I have a suspicion that maybe the corruption with loading menus is probably from upgrading and downgrading makemkv and or vlc vice-versa. Possibly upgrading both apps will mess up where java is located(?) in windows and thus creates a world of trouble. Hope more devs would look into what causes menus to not load on both blurays and 4K movies within VLC. And if there is a quick solution rather than to have to resort to clean installing windows again. Again, I tried to uninstall java many times in windows 11 and it would not uninstall and vlc, makemkv had a weird glitch/ bug where VLC would not play menus. Its extremely annoying!

Also I noticed I had the newest version of java which I tried to remove which it did not remove on my windows. This is why I just clean slated my PC. And I made sure to only install java 8 update 471 (jre8) and made sure it is a 64bit version with that and VLC. Since 32bits exists on the internet and could cause issues(?)

Thanks for the reply.
Well, I thought to try a laptop I have too.
I unplugged the BD drive from the pc and plugged it into the laptop.
Same thing.
So, I'm not sure if it's windows related, at least in my case.

Yeah, I don't have that movie, "Little Women" to test it on mines. But, I did have 4K blurays that wouldn't load menus in VLC that now work flawlessly after clean installing my Windows PC. Also, I don't use MPC so can't comment on that. I did try powerDVD (a third party bluray windows player) since VLC failed to play the menus. And it worked on powerdvd. But not VLC. It was a huge mess. Glad all works now. If you have a second computer you can try it on. That would test your movie in question. I would try that. :D

Also that post you made has leawo blu-ray ripper. Mike just made a post about it being a scam:

Sorry? That's Leawo player I have, not Leawo blu-ray ripper.

By the way:
Do you by any chance remember any of your 4ks that didn't play the menu in VLC? *
Maybe I have some of them, and could check again in my pc (although I'm sure I have checked every 4k I have, except some that I just got that they're still sealed, and they play fine)
Also, when you say some failed to play the menu, what exactly did they do?
Because, as I said previously, mine got to the menu screen, it just hadn't any buttons. It was just the screenshot from the movie.
Did any of yours do that?

I see. By the way, I started to do a full backup with makemkv and it failed after a while.
Unfortunately I closed the software, and didn't keep any log to post here.
Maybe the release itself is problematic eventually, I don't know..
