Are some UHD discs unable to be decrypted? (Sent dumps long ago)

Post by MaxBane »

Hello everyone! Sent a dump in for Ford v Ferrari and Jaws UHD yesterday. I previously sent a dump in for Zombieland UHD almost two months ago twice, but that still also results in "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted" error. Just wondering if some UHD blurays can't be decrypted? Thanks!

Does your log show any issues with collecting the hash key file?

I wonder if your copy of Zombieland is the version that hasn't been decrypted?

It just gives the "video can't be decrypted" error. I should have the hash key file as I was able to rip other UHD discs I have and I have both keydb.cfg as well as the private data tar file that comes with makemkv (that's the hash key file, right?).

My dump ends with CC8B, so it seems to be a different version. I remember reading through that thread when I first tried to decrypt Zombieland back on October. What's funny is that the bluray copy came with both Zombieland 1 and 2 UHDs where Zombieland 2 decrypts perfectly

Just in case, I added the dump files here for all three movies that can't be decrypted at the moment.

The Fixing Volume Key is Unknown post has info about messages in the log if key downloading is failing.

I got Jaws on UHD a bit more than a year ago and ripped it. Perhaps there's a new release with a new key.

This is the log:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.16.5 win(x64-release) started
Using LibreDrive mode (v06.2 id=4FBA32AEC678)
Using direct disc access mode
Evaluation version, 29 day(s) out of 30 remaining
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Saved AACS dump file as C:\Users\MaxBane/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v72_Jaws_5D9F.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
Looks like key downloads fine, so it most likely is a different version. I guess I need to wait for a decryption key for this version.

Actually, it's loaded the on-disk hash table for checking that the read completed properly.

There is no mention of trying to download the hash KEY file (logged as "HK"); do you have downloads disabled? Although, that would normally be logged.

I tried again and it doesn't mention anything about HK. The private data tar file is still from two days ago. Is the hash key file supposed to be downloaded every time a disc is being opened in makemkv? I just assumed it only downloaded a new hash key file if any new keys were added.

After enabling debug logs, I get this:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.16.5 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\MaxBane/MakeMKV_log.txt
Opening files on harddrive at F:/JAWS
Evaluation version, 29 day(s) out of 30 remaining
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Saved AACS dump file as C:\Users\MaxBane/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v72_Jaws_5D9F.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
DEBUG: Code 0 at S#u\au|JPy)q5}Kp:29396092
DEBUG: Code 0 at S#u\au|JPy)q5}Kp:29394850
Failed to open disc
Not sure if downloads are disabled, but if you mean that internet access needs to be enabled, it is.

Welp, looks like reinstalling the program did the trick or maybe the keys were added just now too. Jaws UHD and Ford v Ferrari UHD both decrypted now! :D

Going to try Zombieland UHD again as well.

EDIT: Zombieland is still a no go
