Read Errors and MKV Recommendation

Post by NapMan »

I'm having some issues with some 4K disc getting read errors about halfway through the rip.
On the MakeMKV error classification it says "The simple workaround is to copy all files from the disc to the hard drive manually, without MakeMKV running. If you succeed in this, there is a fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details."
How do I actually do that? When I have the disc in the drive Windows shows no files on there.

Hmm, what's that? Some AI response?

I'm not so sure that it makes sense. I mean, copying with the "file manager" of your OS instead of MakeMKV shouldn't really have significant differences. (The real difference would be that opening the disc with MakeMKV would enable LibreDrive when possible. With at least some drives and/or discs that is required before you can "raw read" through either of them.)

Note that by "copying with MakeMKV" I'm referring to the "backup" option, and without checking the "decrypt" box you'd get what you get through the "file manager" -- with a discatt.dat file in addition that allows you to open it with MakeMKV for decryption and remuxing (IIRC the file is not required for UHD BD / AACS 2.0). (With that said I don't think you can turn it into a decrypted backup with MakeMKV. Either way there aren't many reasons that you don't want to check the box.)

More like it's a drive or disc problem. I think usually the suggestions are making sure that enough power is supplied to your drive (if it is a slim/portable one connected to USB), and cleaning the laser / disc (with appropriate substances / materials).
