4K UHD LOTR Ripping Issues

Post by cmabey »

I'm having issues decrypting the 4k LOTR discs to rip them. I've tried several of then and I get the same issue. Upon looking through the forum I see that the decryption keys should be available for download by the makeMKV software and I do have the check for updates enabled in preferences.

My drive is the LG WH16NS40 NS50, which I initially just flashed the firmware for my version (which was encrypted) to enable the LibreDrive stuff to function properly with my drive's firmware. I had no problems copying from blu-rays until I got in the 4k Lord of the Rings bluray set. My drive was saying that the volume key was unknown for the disc. I poked around here in the forum and saw that I should crossflash to the 1.02 mk WH16NS60, which I did. In both cases the drive would recognize and load the disc so I could look at the files on the disc using life explorer, but with either firmware copying the disc failed. For both changes to the firmware I used the SDF flashing tool. I have also power cycled my PC (windows 10) and I still have the same issue.

I am unsure of how to proceed from here. Should I submit dump files for the decryption keys?

Yes I do. I have a content blocker setup on my router for the ru domain and probably some ip groups for the same region. I'm not user what kind of filtering the IT department of my university does to the internet before it hits my router (or if that even matters).

As a follow-up question while I get the VPN sorted out. I have already ripped close to 2 dozen regular blu-ray discs without any issue. Why would they rip just fine and the UHD discs give me problems, if it is really decryption key related (this assumes that all blu-rays need a decryption key).

The VPN sorted it all out. Thanks for that!

To answer your question, it's because normal Blu-ray Discs can all be decrypted, no per-title key derivation is needed. After the player keys were leaked by WinDVD several years ago, all rippers used the leaked keys instead, making hashed keys irrelevant. By contrast, the keys for UltraHD Blu-ray Disc haven't been leaked, and with Intel deprecating SGX, that may never happen.
