Issue Flashing WH16NS40

Post by incendevark »

Hello all,
I recently purchased a WH16NS40 drive and wanted to flash it to start ripping 4k. However, whenever I try to flash either from the cmd prompt or the GUI, it gives me an error code that I cannot seem to find anywhere else, (0x82052603). I am not sure what to do as I have also tried the WH16SN60 firmware and that did not work either. Here is more some more information:

Drive Information
OS device name: F:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: M42M4L41824
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 14:40
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 57

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.05
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

EDIT 1: It also says "Write DRAM NG 05/26/03" when I attempt to flash on the cmd prompt. Not sure what this means or if it helps.
EDIT 2: Thanks everyone, I ended up doing what was suggested below and flashing directly to the WH16NS60 firmware. I didn't know the difference between DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WH16NS60_1.02_NS50.bin. and WH16NS60 1.02-MK. It is working now and currently ripping my 4K copy of The Last Waltz. Thanks again everyone!

Current FW is encrypted. Need to use 'enc' in command line or SDFTool Flasher.

I tried that, it was still giving me the error code. I moved the bin file to a folder on my D: drive. Here is the command I was using: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d F: rawflash enc -i D:\Firmware\DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WH16NS40_1.02_NS50.bin. I tried again today and it is still not working.

Did you try the SDFTool Flasher? It's just easier & I'm too lazy today to sort out the command line. Sorry. :D

edit BTW Have you tried the recommended "WH16NS40 on any Firmware directly to > WH16NS60 1.02MK"? I have a vague recollection of needing to flash some ASUS (3.10?) interim FW when sticking to the xH16NS40, but can't seem to locate a reference. "directly to > WH16NS60 1.02MK" has the added benefit of curing the "sleep bug".

You cannot flash directly from an encrypted firmware to DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WH16NS40_1.02_NS50.bin. Flash to WH16NS60 1.02-MK first, then you can flash to DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WH16NS40_1.02_NS50.bin if you want.
Cheers :D

Marty meant: Flash WH16NS40 first with enc enabled with a WH16NS40 firmware. Then you can flash to whatever you want. Make sure enc is disabled for the second flash.
After thinking about it, Marty's procedure might work as well. I always flash the same firmware the drive is called and then re-flash to my final firmware I like to have on the drive.

In a nutshell: Before flashing a DE firmware you have to flash a MK firmware,

Hey coops, I meant exactly what I said. NS60 1.02-MK can be flashed to first and is the recommneded firmware to use. If @incendevark then wants to use any other firmware, it can be flashed again no problem.
Cheers :D

Thanks all for this thread, I picked up a manufactured Aug 2023 WH16NS40 drive and initially I received error 0x82052603, flashing with DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK did the trick and my drive is UHD libredrive capable
