Hi all,
In my continuing saga of trying to rip some UHD disks I bought by mistake, I have successfully ripped the first disk of a 2 disk movie!!!
And now the second disk is proving weirdly difficult.
I wasn't paying attention to exactly how long the first disk took but I know it can't have been more than a few hours. I'm using the "backup" option then converting the files later. The second disk(with what I thought were the exact same settings?) took 24 hours to get to 70% and was reading at 11-7mb/s. I'm not obsessed with speed or anything but I can't believe that speed is normal.
Drive is an LG WH14NS40 flashed with the custom firmware and attached via Unitek Y-1099. I did have it going through a 10' USB extension cable, but tested it directly into the back of the PC via 3 foot cable with the exact same results.
I then figured maybe it was the disk? And tried the next disk in the set(4k UHD Lord of the Rings trilogy in case that matters). Same thing: starts off reading at 14mb/s, drops slowly as the read continues. I get the same behavior whether or not I check "decrypt video files". As a further experiment I tried changing the destination to my C:/ drive(which should support writing at a considerably higher speed) and got a little bit better 18mb/s. On the off chance that was indeed the bottle neck I then aimed it at my M.2 drive and watched things actually get worse(starting at 11mb/s).
This is supposed to be a 16x drive and I'm barely topping 4x.
What have I managed to mess up?
Ok, this cannot be a normal read-rate?

So I tried fiddling with a couple more things and got it up to 25mb/s... for about half the disk. Then it dropped down to 8.1 and says its going to take 60 hours. This is crazy.

Well I seem to have resolved my speed issue: turns out if you're doing literally anything else besides ripping the DVD it absolutely kills the speed. No idea WHY, but everything went way faster when I set it to go then went and did something else.
