These discs have been an extreme pain....I've had so many different disc read errors, I almost just quit. Not sure if this method has been suggested or not....but if you have Anydvd HD and Makemkv, I found a way to get past some discs that just kept giving me read errors in makemkv (Season 4 disc 1 would not rip in makemkv for me....no matter how much I cleaned it). So I tried the following and it worked perfectly:

1. Rip encrypted to image in Anydvd HD
2. Mount image in Virtual CloneDrive
3. Open image in Makemkv and then proceed to decrypt.

This method worked perfectly for me and makemkv was flying when decrypting from the image instead of the disc. For some reason, anydvd hd was able to read the disc much better than makemkv....not sure why that is.

Thanks to everyone sharing their solutions - just wanted to take a moment to say this is always such a helpful forum community :)

Unfortunately, this feels like an epidemic with so many peoples' drives (including mine) suddenly not working anymore, so even solutions of doing encrypted backups no longer is an option, since after backing up most of 8 seasons, my drive stopped recognizing disks and while Windows 10 sees the drive, it always tells me "no disc" when I open makemkv, regardless of whether i have an audio cd, blu ray, or uhd in the drive. Sounds like many others hit this too. I wonder if these drives all are truly dead. What about reading a disk would cause so many drives to not recognize disks anymore?

Did you try to re-flash the drive's firmware and also fully shutdown and restart your PC (full cold power-down reboot, not just Windows' "restart")?

I am up to season 7 finally. I will start ripping that soon. I should re-rip season 8 but at least I have the stand alone set to work with in addition to this collection. I may hold off on doing so until my patience has returned. LOL I am still curious about the bu40n and how much more reliable that drive is over these desktop drives. I can't believe it's taken this long to rip these discs. Holy hell.

Yesterday I tried powering down, unplugging, and restarting the pc to no avail. This morning i re-flashed, and will try again after the workday to power off and restart

I found that flashing had no impact at all. What "usually" worked for me was inserting a different media type and allowing the drive to scan it. Then I was able to switch back to these UHD's. I can tell you I'm super happy to have bought this BU40N drive! S7D1 wouldn't work in my NS60 drive at ALL so I waited til the bu40n was delivered. Quickly downgraded it from 1.01 to 1.00. Stuck in S7D1, and with no speed control it's ripping the episodes at 6x right now. NICE.

It's going to take a LONG time to go through them all like this. I'm on season 3 as we speak and at 2x I've not had any issues. I can't even read the disc at 4x or higher. I've tried.
Do you know if the same happens on Pioneer drives (not that they can be used for decryption, but still)?
Any updates on the Pioneer drives yet, Mike?

I do but even with this amazing little drive, I'm still having trouble with some of these discs. I'm pulling out all my tricks to get the last disc (S7D2) fully ripped without errors. I'm also going back and re-ripping one disc that gave me read errors when it ripped and told me it finished (um, what?) but clearly I don't trust that. For these last remaining discs, I'm putting the drive in LibreDrive mode and then reading a protected ISO with PowerISO. When it hits an error I just tell it to retry and it seems to be reading some of these troubled discs (S4D1).

But yea, I love this little drive! I didn't even bother speed controlling it.

That also "usually" works for me, but right now today I just had another "incident" and this time the drive wouldn't even read a standard Blu-ray disc. Flashed from 3.10 MK down to 3.01 DE and it's been revived once again. Ripping a disc as we speak :)

Someone should write a paper on this and perform an extensive study with hundreds of drives and thousands of discs cause this is insane.

Yeah I don't know what the cause is but it's very messed up. I found when it wouldn't even read a Blu-ray that power cycling the drive a few times brought it back to life. I'm still working on my last disc s7d2 which appears to be physically scratched so that may be a problem. These discs are awful.

Also sent in some files. For me it is S1D2, S1D4 and S2D4 (so far) not decrypting. So there are clearly different versions floating around.

And I can confirm the difficulty reading these discs. For now I just create an iso from the disc and when that is successful I run makemkv on the iso. Cleaning them with soft soap and a lint free cloth seems to help.

I ordered a replacement set. I can't get the scratched disc to rip no matter what I do so it can get replaced. That bu40n is one hell of a drive, though. I'm glad I have it now.
