The Fog UHD 4K - Rips in 1.12.3, but not 1.14.0

Post by stuckinkodiagain »

Hello,

I just got John Carpenter's "The Fog" in 4K UHD from the UK. I opened it in MakeMKV version 1.12.3, and it decrypted the disc just dine. But then I saw MakeMKV was updated to version 1.14.0. So I quit out, updated it, re-opened MakeMKV, and tried to decrypt the disc again... and it failed.

I've since reverted back to version 1.12.3, and all is well. But wanted to let you guys know that something funky is going on with the 1.14.0 decryption.

Thanks!

Strange... There seemed to be another update today to MakeMKV, even though it had the same version number (1.14.0). I downloaded it anyway, installed, and now "The Fog" (and several other recent UHD releases like "Wreck-It Ralph," "Incredibles 2," and "Superman: The Movie") are working fine in the latest version.

I'm having an issue ripping The Fog using my ASUS BW-16D1HT. Getting constant scsci errors and it often reports, "udf: node fe/efe failed!" I'm usually eventually able to get into the disk, but about halfway through ripping the main title, MakeMKV will gradually begin reading more and more slowly, until eventually coming to a halt and reporting the rip failed.

This is the first time I've attempted to rip a region-locked disk. I've made sure to thoroughly clean the disk, so my hunch is that this might have something to do with the fact that it's region-locked. Either that, or it's a coincidence I suppose. I'm on Mac OS using the latest version of MakeMKV. Drive's firmware is 3.10. Here's some of the errors I've been seeing in better detail:

Blu-ray region coding is very distinct from DVD region coding.

A DVD drive has a defined region code and this can influence playback of region protected discs, regardless of the (licensed) playback software you might use.

Blu-ray region coding is implemented purely in the software playback solution. Blu-ray drives do not have their own Blu-ray region code. So region coding will only be relevant if you are trying to playback a disc in something like PowerDVD. But when ripping a Blu-ray disc region coding is entirely irrelevant.

For the sake of clarity, a combo Blu-ray/DVD drive will have a region code but it is only relevant for the DVD playback portion. So your Asus BW-16D1HT might have a DVD region code of 1, 2, 4, 5 etc but there is no equivalent hardware region code for Blu-ray regions A, B, and C.

These are just read errors and they did not occur due to any sort of DRM issue. You can try cleaning your disc, using a different drive, or exchanging the disc with your retailer. There isn't really a software solution to your issue.

Ah gotcha. That’s unfortunate, but I suppose it’s ultimately a coincidence that this is my first region locked disk, and also the only to ever fail in my drive. Felt so randomly connected to me, but a coincidence is a coincidence I suppose. I’ll just have to return the disk.

Out of curiosity, were you having an issue ripping the 4K/UHD Blu-ray of The Fog? Or was it a standard 1080p Blu-ray?

I ask because I can't seem to see a 4K version of The Fog included in the short list of region locked UHD discs. So in addition to my earlier explanation, it might make things seem a bit less coincidental if the disc wasn't actually region locked.

(If you bought the film in a 2-disc set with both a 1080p and UHD version, any region lock information on the case would almost certainly only apply to the 1080p disc)
