Prospect (2018) and outgassing

Post by Bowi_QC »

Friendly reminder / teaching opportunity:

I just got my first experience with a disc and a case that were covered with chemical residues. I backed-up both the regular Blu-ray and the UHD Blu-ray after many difficulties but it's only 10 days later that I looked at the resulting files and the logs... I decided to open the case again and it was smudgy everywhere.

AFAIK, ripping dirty discs is bad for a drive's longevity, so don't forget to look at your discs and cases. My case is now drying and I found a use for my old empty jewel cases in the meantime...

For people like me who never experienced that before, try using a simple microfiber cloth (like the ones for glasses). Just slide the cloth from the dirty spot, outwards. I think what matters is that it looks clear... Use your breath if needed.

... ... Now... My drive is throwing a bunch of debug codes... ... Gotta go...

You do not need to use any special types of cloth. Just wash the disc and the case (warm water and some dish detergent). Dry with a cotton cloth (dish towel, handkerchief, cloth napkin, etc.) Let the case air dry for a while, then dust it off with another lint-free cloth. Microfiber doesn't do anything for this. The residue is just oil and lubricant from the manufacturing process and washes off.

in the case of oil/lubricants (non-polar residues) using a cleaner with more hydrophobicity can lead to ripping that water/surfactant didn't, ymmv. I also believe microfiber cloths can aid to van der waals attract the residues better than cotton... again ymmv! I've ripped ~10-15K discs over 20 years; a tiny fraction were extremely troublesome and undeterred by water/detergent/cotton.
