Knight Rider Complete Series 4K UHD S3D3 & S4D2 Ripping Errors

Post by ShatteredGlass »

I just got done ripping all 21 Discs of the Knight Rider 4K set. However, I was unable to rip two episodes from S3D3 and two episodes from S4D2.

Code: Select all

- S3D3
Knight of the Chameleon: [00002.mpls] [KNIGHT RIDER S3D3_t01]
Junk Yard Dog: [00010.mpls | KNIGHT RIDER S3D3_t03]

- S4D2
The Wrong Crowd: [00002.mpls | KNIGHT RIDER S4D2_t01]
Knight Racer: [00010.mpls KNIGHT RIDER S4D2_t03]
I'm not new to to this hobby, so believe me when I say I've exhausted everything I have trying to get these two discs to rip. I tried all six of my WH16NS40 drives, two of my BP50NB40 drives and lastly my trusty ol' BU40N drive. All of them fail at the same spots every time. Keep in mind that I was able to rip all the other 19 discs without any issues and I was able successfully rip 3/5 titles on both of the discs that I'm having issues with. But what's weird is that I'm unable to read the same two titles from both discs, 00002.mpls and 00010.mpls. So I'm guessing this has got to be some kind of mastering error.

Before I decide to send this set back and reorder another one, I just wanted to know if anyone else ran into this same issue or if you were successful in ripping all discs?

I had no problem with season 1, 2, or 3. I haven't ripped 4 yet but not anticipating issues.

I'm 99% sure it was mastering errors on both discs. I sent the set back and am going to order a new set.

Yeah, I ripped everything just fine with the exception of those four episodes on the two discs I listed. I will say that SOME of the other discs acted up a little bit, but then I moved them to other drives and they ripped fine.

Hi - I also got the same set but am unable to rip it. I keep getting this error:

Code: Select all

The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted.
I sent the dump to svq@makemkv.com a month ago but I tried it again a couple days ago and still no luck. Did you get this error and/or have to do anything specific for this disc set? Thx!

Download the latest public KeyDB database and extract it to the MakeMKV data directory (where the dumps are).
Cheers :D

I did that earlier today (presume the one from http://fvonline-db.bplaced.net) and still no luck. I searched through that file and do not see one for this show that's after the release date (at least in the US).

Search for the discID which is the sha-1 of the unit_key_RO.inf file in the AACS folder on the disc (or in a dump file). If it’s not in the keyDB, you should email the dump file to svq@makemkv.com, then if you want to help the community, host the dump somewhere and post a download link.
Cheers :D

The date field in the keydb file corresponds to the disc authoring date, not the release date. So the correct entry for your discs will most likely have a date several weeks or months before the actual release date.
Public KeyDB Disc Submissions
  • LG/Buffalo/Asus drives only (Pioneer drives are not supported)
  • Please use file hosts, not forum attachments
  • If your disc dump is under 3MB, you need to manually include the MKB_RO.inf file from the AACS folder

Thank you so much @MartyMcNuts and @keydb_helper !

- the sha1 confirmed that those discs were in the public keydb (thank you to folks who added them!)
- the problem was that I needed to rename keydb.cfg to KEYDB.cfg on macOS! (I'm on the latest 1.18.2 MakeMKV)

My first disc is now happily ripping! Thanks again, really appreciate the help!

Just wanted to post an update on this in case anyone comes across it in the future.

tl;dr - The problem was definitely some kind of mastering issue with that first set I ordered. All discs from the second set ripped without any issues.

I sent the first box set back and received a new one a few days ago. Rather than just rip the two discs that I was unable to rip, I decided to rip all the discs again. My reason was because a lot of the discs that I was able to rip, I still had some issues ripping them in one drive and had to move them into another drive to be ripped. So based on a hunch that the first set was just a bad batch, I just decided to rip all discs again from the second set I received. Thankfully, all the discs in the new set ripped without any issues. I ripped all 21 discs between all six of my drives in one pass just like I normally do when ripping box sets and didn't have a single issue. So the discs from first set I got definitely had some kind of mastering issue no doubt!

Yes, I did the same but got errors with S2D3 and S4D4.

S2D3 - L-EC Uncorrectable Errors
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00004.m2ts' at offset '1276772352'

S4D4 - Illegal Request: Invalid in CDB
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:INVALID FIELD IN CDB' occurred while reading '/AACS/DUPLICATE/Content002.cer' at offset '0'

I think that I have to contact Universal Studio for disc replacement.

Have you tried cleaning the two discs? I know they are new, but sometimes the off-gassing of the plastic cases can cause a haze to build up on the disc. So even if you think they are clean, still clean them anyways. If that doesn't work, do you have another drive you can try?

It's unlikely that Universal Studios is going to give you new discs simply because you aren't able to rip them. They would probably only consider that if the discs won't actually play in an official UHD Blu-ray player. Did you buy them from an online retailer? If you can't get them to rip, then your best bet would probably be to just return the set and then order a new one like I did. But check to see if your retailer charges a restocking fee first, if so, then make sure you tell them there were two discs that were defective and that you just want to exchange the set for another one.
