Ok... silly question. Nice to see some of you getting this done, even though some are struggling with problems here and there. I just ordered the Middle Earth box set from Amazon and this is my first 4K purchase and will be my first 4K rip. I have an extensive collection (3000+) of movies on DVD and Blu-Ray and I know my bit rates for encoding them to MP4 format. I usually use 1500kbps video for DVD and 3500kbps video for Blu-Ray and bring my audio to 192kbps, 48K hz, Stereo for all my audio, regardless.

What bitrate is recommended for 4K and about audio, are you re-encoding to MP3 format or are you using pass-thru?

Thanks for any advice you can recommend!

PS: Seeing it is recommended 35–45 Mbps (35K=45K Kbps). Is this what you all use or do you leave the files in the ripped file format for your streaming?
Doesn't encoding reduce visual quality? Why would not want the full 4k experience?

Hi

I was wondering when ripping the Lord of the Rings 4K extended versions, MakeMKV shows two copies:

The Lord of the Rings- The Fellowship of the Ring (EXT.) PT. 1_t01
The Lord of the Rings- The Fellowship of the Ring (EXT.) PT. 1_t04

Which one is best to select for all three movies?

Any help will be appreciated.

Apologies if this has been asked already.

I think, there is a relation zu different language versions.

The 4k Star Wars Skywalker Collection has multiple copies per disc. German spoken language has every of the copies, but the print running text at the beginning is different. One is español, one is english, another french ...... I've ripped all of them to find the german one.

Perhaps the same with LODR?

So first time ripping. Do I only want the one with chapters? i.e. the one big 70gb file, and I can ignore the 70gb file that doesn't have chapter markers and the first, 3rd and 4th ones as well? I ripped all 5 parts of it and the 3rd and 4th files at ~200mb each were both black. 1st was just warnings. The second had chapters and was the full p1 of the extended cut of fellowship of the ring. The 5th one was the movie without chapter markers on VLC media player. Do I lose anything removing the two that seem to be blank?

I've been having a beast of a time trying to get all of the movies from the Motion Picture Trilogy ripped. I've finally gotten 8 of the 9 discs ripped with the only one that I can't get is The Two Towers theatrical version. I bought the set new from Amazon and can still return/exchange it for a few weeks. I don't ever intend to watch the movies via disc as I watch all of my movies through plex. I don't even have a UHD player other than my son's PS5 which is in his room. If you were in my situation would you:

1) Keep the current set as 8 of 9 rips are pretty good and if I ever did want to watch The Two Towers theatrical I do have that rip in 1080p
2) Make backups of the actual disc to keep in addition to the movie files (they would all be saved on my Unraid server so in theory it isn't much of a true backup option) then exchange the set and hope that I can rip the final disc
3) Exchange the set, don't both saving the backups, I have the files I need from the 8 other discs.

Normally I wouldn't give any of this a second thought and just exchange the set for a new one but after seeing how hard it is to get these discs ripped I'm wondering if 8/9 is quite good and I'm likely to only watch the extended editions so I should keep the existing set just in case I ever lose the files due to data loss.

Thanks for the opinions.

In the past when I've had to exchange a set of discs, I've always ended up with both sets for a short time. Amazon sends a new set and the old set has a date by which it must be returned or you get charged for the second set. I end up mixing and matching so I have a set I have ripped and Amazon gets a full set in return.

It has been more than a year since I've had to do this, so if Amazon's policies have changed since then, I'm unaware.

That was a good idea. Only problem is I just went to return/exchange it and it appears the price of the set has gone up and they aren't offering me the choice to replace it with the same item. I can only replace it with a "similar" recommended item (other movies and items) or return for my money back. I guess I can buy the new one at the higher price and then return that one (after swapping discs). I didn't follow through with the return but not sure if Amazon would get suspicious if I tried to return the first one, choose not to, rebuy the same item and then return the newer one. Guessing Amazon doesn't really pay attention to this level of detail but who knows. Last thing I want to do is get black balled by Amazon...

Since you only need one movie, do you have a friend or family member with the movie sitting on a shelf? Or maybe your local library? Or does a local pawn shop have it for cheap? I know 4K movies are harder to come by than regular blu-rays, but it doesn't hurt to look around.

It is all a legal grey area of course, but you have actually purchased the movies; you just need a disc you can rip.
