Bad Disc?

Hello, I am relatively new to Makemkv. I have put about over 100 discs through it, with 100% success rate. Mostly just DVDs and Blu Rays, I patched the firmware on the drive and was successfully able to rip star wars III 4k as my first UHD disc, but my second attempt at uhd has not followed that trend. It's Avatar 4k, my first 3 layer disc. I've tried powercycling the computer and the drive, and cleaning the disc.

Thank you for your response. I did search, but couldn’t find the exact sting of errors and found conflicting suggestions as to the cause. For my knowledge can you elaborate as to what exactly in the logs points to a power issue?

Also, I’ll be reaching out to you soon regarding patching a pioneer BDR-212V.

Drives that are powered by USB often exhibit a behavior where they work for a while and then the drive disappears for a moment. What ends up happening is the drive spins fast enough that it requests more power than a USB port can give. When this happens, the drive reboots; it appears to work fine but the rip it was doing is ruined.

In truth, powering an optical drive from a USB port is kind of a bad idea. By specification, a USB 2.0 port has 500mA of power available. A USB 3.0 port has 900mA of power available. This was enough power for a keyboard or a mouse. An optical drive or a hard drive aren't really the things the designers were thinking of when they designed USB. That's why a lot of optical drives powered by USB have a dongle with two USB plugs. Both need to be plugged into high powered USB ports for the drive to have a chance at getting enough power.

USB-C ports from the modern era have more power available on them, especially if they support Power Delivery.

I have a couple follow up questions.

I just want to confirm the likeliness of a power issue if I’ve been able to put multiple discs through the BU04N and was only having trouble with this single disc? Albeit the only 3 layer disc I’ve tried yet. And it hasn’t stopped at the same spot every time, it’s gotten about 80% of the way and then quit a couple times as well. Just wanted to add those details.



I’ve read that pioneers are the highest quality drives, and found that people were having recent success flashing the BDR-212V, so I ordered one and an OWC mercury enclosure to go with it, which should cover any power issue of I’m not mistaken.

I’ve read that not all drives work identically with every disc, in response to this, would you say there would ever be a time where the LG BU04N would read a disc better than the Pioneer? Would there be any need to keep the LG if I have the Pioneer? The Verbatim is still in the return window so I’m considering returning it, especially if I’d have to drop another $40+ for a high power usb hub to be able to fully utilize it.

If it still fails try backing up the disc with decryption unchecked then try creating the MKV from the backup (Open File, select the BDMV\index file). Just ran into this with the 4K of Postal.

You could try cleaning the disc before buying a powered hub as it may allow the rip to complete.
