A certain rental company with red dispenser machines won a court case not too long ago that their practice of selling off the digital codes was legal.

It is a thought for all those titles with digital codes for those of us who rip the disks.

I absolutely HATE Blu-Ray’s, as about 50-60% of the time it (the DRM/AACS) won’t allow you to Rip the entire (whole/Full) disk.

(That is, using the full “Back Up” option).

So you can’t get (or look at) the “Bonus” features of the disks.

Or, you get that Stupid/Crazy “Red Screen” [of death], that tells you that you need to UPDATE your Blu Ray Player.

(I know, I KNOW....I could/can Rip just the MKV videos files - but some of us really desire to have an [actual] “Back Up”).

BUT....., on the other hand, I’ve had AWESOME (over 90%) success ripping UHD/4K disks, as it seems that the security/DRM is not as “Strict” as the regular Blu Ray realm.

I think that this has something to do with UHD’s reliance on HDMI 2.1/HDCP 2.2, which is SUPPOSED to be “superior” to [Blu Ray] AACS.

But, I found that MakeMKV completely DESTROYS the DRM on the UHD’s

So, as I’ve been getting the [New] UHD movies, I’ve been erasing all my [old] “Half-Broken” Blu Ray Rips, with my [new/Newer] UHD Rips (a Win-WIN!! :D).

Regarding the Blu Ray Drive (as noted in this post).

I got an external Blu Ray burner (from Amazon), called, the “OWC Mercury Pro 16X Blu-ray Burner.”

It has the LG [WH16NS60] engine within, and I believe, with the “Old” (1.02) firmware, required, for successful MakeMKV (LibreDrive) Ripping.

(It is “expensive” [at $130] though).

I know someone only wanted the “ROM” but I believe these are all gone (in the “Dustbin Of Time” - like Cassettes or CD Players - LOL :P ).

Seems to be the consensus. Like I said there was a time when ROMs cost waaaay less, but I see that time has passed.

Ok, so I bought the WH14NS40 drive with the Unitek Y-1099 USB to sata cable and started trying to make sense of the flashing instructions from this page: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=19634 . I downloaded the "New! The all you need firmware pack:" which I am hoping is exactly what the name implies. I assume since I have a 5.25" LG desktop drive I want the file in the "LG 5.25 desktop" folder.

EDIT: ok had to tinker with it a bit but seems successful.

This is the output:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d I: rawflash -i C:\AA_Master\fw\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

Reading input file C:\AA_Master\fw\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH14NS40_1.05_212005061444_KL9K7U83941
Ready to write drive flash memory. (auto confirmed)

Sorry, can’t help you there Bro.

As I noted, I did things the EASY way, so brought the “OWC Mercury Pro,” which is/was a External drive, already built, and has all the firmware already loaded.

All I had to do is “Plug And Play” (with its included USB3 cable).

You are thus, doing this the “Hard” way.

So one of the local “Geniuses” will have to help you out with this.

Good Luck! :)

EDIT: OK, Congratulations - Looks like you got it working (you are a “Better” Man then me).

Ok... after all that... I heroically dropped my disk in the drive and MakeMKV says... no disk inserted.

Whoops. That explains it.

Ran:

makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d I: rawflash enc -i C:\AA_Master\fw\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

Got:

Reading input file C:\AA_Master\fw\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Sending image in encrypted format
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH14NS40_1.05_212005061444_KL9K7U83941
Ready to write drive flash memory. (auto confirmed)

And now it appears to actually be working. I haven't played with MakeMKV in about a brazillion years.

I am however going to buy MakeMKV as a thank you for all the wonderful help I've gotten.

So I'm a tad new to MakeMKV(I did use it as part of Auto Gordian Knott 15 someodd years ago, but that was, well, automated); but am I correctly understanding that the process involves first copying the entire DVD to disk, THEN converting the video out? Or is it possible to simply rip and convert the main feature all in one go?

EDIT: nevermind, answered my own question. I'm rally glad I bought this program, it may well be the most idiot-proof piece of software I own. In terms of simple and stellar design it is top of the heap.
