Options for failed discs?

Post by mkvforumuser »

We have a 26 year old TV show my wife really likes. Unfortunately 3 of the 6 discs are not reading either on the DVD player or MakeMKV. The DVD player menu locks up and MakeMKV gives errors like:
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:TIMEOUT ON LOGICAL UNIT' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_08_1.VOB' at offset '0'
What are our options here? Is there repair software that attempt recovery? What does everyone else do about bad discs?

The problem is that you have to get the disks to "readable". MakeMKV isn't gong to tolerate failed reads, but playing software (generally) does. If BOTH are failing, the disks need to have their surfaces cleaned and scratches removed.

Thanks. I did clean them, and the surfaces look flawless in the center half, though there are a few lighter scratches further out. These disks actually have a label with clear areas, and they are the only discs I have ever seen you can look through. That may be the problem? The series is "Dark Angel (2000)" for reference.

Check the Suggestions on backing up old self written DVDs thread for other programs you can try to extract data from damaged disks.
