Then I went to the site and bought a license...

app_Key = "<my key>"

Ran again into the same issue.

How can this be solved?

All good.

The file is ~/.MakeMKV/settings.conf

for some reason I kept updating ~/.MakeMKV/update.conf whihc is the wrong file

Just a note (which caught me out): app_Key is case sensitive - ensure that you have a capital "K"...
