So I downloaded MakeMKV and I've ripped a few movies. They play fine on my notebook. I click on them and they start playing in VLC Player. I can also go to chapters and pick up the movie there.

The problem is when I try to use a DVD in my Home Theater System attached to my TV. I've burned the DVDs using Windows File Manager. They do not Autoplay; I have to select the filename; most often "title 0000." Also, I cannot go to any chapters or rewind or fast forward.

I've copied 3 movies onto disk and I get an error message at the "end" of the burn. Can I use MakeMKV to actually burn the dvd; is this done by the "backup" button on MakeMKV? The backup button is always greyed out for me. Should I be using something like Roxio to burn the MKV file that MakeMKV puts on my notebook.

Can you give this new guy some direction? Thanks.

MakeMKV is not the tool for the job you're trying to do - to create a DVD to play in a "non-computer" DVD player, you need authoring software. How any other format is handled puts you at the mercy of software designers who's mission wasn't necessarily the same as yours....

Many DVD/BD players and smart TVs are rather stupid when it comes to playing MKV or MP4 files, if they support them at all. Many have problems with "chapters", subtitles, language selection, and non-standard speeds like fast or slow. Some will play them if they're on a flash drive, but not across a network.

Better support exists in "media players", such as the Western Digital "LIVE" series, or any of the dozen of other manufacturers. Since these units can't fall back on the excuse, "Well, at least it plays DVDs and Blurays, which is what we sell it for!", they offer better support for file formats and even how the files are accessed. My Samsung TV plays files well enough for the kids, but I still use a media player, because most of what I watch involves subtitles or alternate language tracks. And I'd rather skip over the titles when watching a marathon of a particular series!
