it says Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free on the front page of MakeMKV.
so, why is this program expiring (from the programs top bar: This version expires: Sun Oct12 2014)?
I thought that if you want to rip blurays you have to buy the license (after trialtime), but DVD would be free always.
Did I completely misunderstand how this thing works?

You can read about it in this topic:

Without the key, purchased or beta, the program has a hard-coded expiration date. Before this date a new version is always released that pushes expiration date into the future. So if you don't have the key, you are forced to use the latest version (or set the date on your computer back). If you have the key, you can use any version at any time.
