Episodes show as one file

I'm trying to rip one particular DVD but all the TV episodes are showing as only one large file. I'd prefer them to be separate files.

Within the same series on other season DVD's, the episodes show fine. It's just this one DVD that puts them all together.

This is actually common. Easiest way to deal with it is to use a tool that lets you split on chapter boundaries, AFTER ripping the whole file.

If you're going to compress the video with something like Handbrake, you just tell HB which chapter numbers to include in each resultant file. When I'm dealing with a whole season of episodes, such as the Ranma 1/2 disk sets (7 or 8 episodes per file), I use handbrake's command line interface and batch files to split them.

If you are not compressing or if you just want to split the file before compressing you can use MKVToolNix to break up the file by chapters as well.

Thanks folks!

I used Handbrake. But I will also try toolnix next time.

...when I used Handbrake, I was still able to save it as a MKV file.

MKVToolNix will not change the container type. It allows you to split, merge, and insert (subs or audio tracks) to you current mkv files. For example, I used it to break one large file into the individual episodes that I wanted and I also used it to merge the two halves of the extened LotR films into single files so I wouldn't have to open them individually or queue them. I have also used it to add subs to videos so I would have to re-rip or re-encode them. It's a pretty cool tool, and pretty fast too.
