So I'm wondering when ripping just the main movie of a bluray what is the average size of the file? I'm asking because I have somewhere around 50 movies that I need to rip and I want to know if I have enough room on my hard drive or if I need to buy a new one.

Check the size of the largest M2TS on the disk which usually is the main movie.

~20-30gb

1.5TB ought to handle 50 of them, it depends on your specific Blu Ray choices (I have several 10gb movies).

If you are ripping movies, plan on buying new disks. It's going to happen... 50 is NEVER enough! :)

And consider some of the tools to reduce the size of the movies. Disposing of audio tracks you are not interested in can help, but tools like Handbrake (from handbrake.fr) can compress the video using better algorithms, which can reduce the size by 20 to 80%, depending upon the file.
