I'm trying to do a backup of the full disc and the option is greyed out? I just upgraded to 1.8.13
Do I need to do something different?

Correct - no backup option for DVD, just convert to MKV.

Backup won't be available unless you're dealing with a Bluray disk.

Just curious why this is the case? I would rather not install another program just to do a full DVD backup. Thanks.

Probably because there are dozens of "make an ISO" programs out there for DVD, and there weren't when Mike added the backup option for BD. But only Mike could really answer that.

I was going to make a back-up for my UHD of Aquaman and the backup option is greyed out. Is it only regular 1080P blu-rays that can be backed up? or is UHD blu-ray discs also like DVD's, where there is not an option for backup to use on MakeMKV? I am usiung version 1.17.5 [win(x64-release)]. Fully purchased.

If you have selected the large button to "open" the disk, backup is locked out. But it should be available for a BD or UHD prior to opening it.

This thread is 8½ years old! DVD backups were added to MakeMKV years ago.
To reiterate, as @Woodstock said, don't open the disc!
Place the disc in the drive and open MakeMKV (or vice versa), and as soon as the disc information appears, then use the Backup button.
If you "open" the disc first, the backup button is disabled.
