Forced subtitles

Can someone help me with forced subtitles. I thought I knew what they were and how to use them, but it's not working for me so I guess I'm doing something wrong.
My interpretation of forced subtitles is a movie you're watching with subtitles off, but if there is foreign dialogue the subtitles will appear - to translate what is being said.
I bought 'A Good Day to Die Hard' and right at the beginning there is foreign dialogue. I watched it on Blu-Ray with subtitles off and during this dialogue, subtitles came up.
I ripped the disc with forced subtitles but they do not appear in the ripped version.
Am I doing something daft?
