I am new to using makemkv so bear with me. After I scan the blu ray disc, it decrypts it and then gives me the options of what I want to rip...should I only be chosing one of the choices (usually the largest file size around 25GB +/- depending on the movie)? What if there are two files around that size, how do I know which one I should rip?

After I am riping these to mkv I am then using Handbrake to encode them and I am running into some problems with Handbrake not producing a valid file or the encode taking an incredibly long time (sometimes over 5 hours) where as before, on the exact same Handbrake settings and same quality, it would only take 2 hours when i ripped and encoded straight from the disc. While I realize this isn't a Handbrake forum I am pretty sure that a lot of you probably use Handbrake as well so if anyone can shed some light on that it would be great. Maybe even what settings people are using to encode?

A lot depends upon the disk itself. Sometimes, the multiple files are really one set of video scenes, linked together in different ways. Things like deleted scenes, alternate endings, even scenes where the signs in the background are in different languages.

As for the encoding time in Handbrake.... I'm averaging 8-14 frames per second for BD files on my hardware, so 5+ hours to encode a 2 hour movie isn't that unusual. If you aren't already, you may want to try the Nightly Build versions, rather than the "release" version; there are a number of Bluray things that work much better in the NBs!

Also on the first statement since it can vary depending on the disc, if you have two files on the disc that are 25GB do you review both tracks first to chose which one you want to rip? Is there any advantage to leaving all the boxes checked and ripping all the tracks?

Yes, I was referring to Handbrake's Nightly Builds. Haven't seen such a thing for MakeMKV!

The differences between the release and NB version of Handbrake is rather stark, especially if you're working with Bluray.

Although I had to stop keeping current with them... Around July, they removed something I REALLY, REALLY use a lot, the ability to generate a batch file on Windows. There are certain jobs that using the HB queue is just too tedious for, so I tweak the settings in the GUI, generate a batch file, then edit it in a text editor. When you have 10 or more files to process where just the file names change, why screw around?
