Is there a description of what this does somewhere? I have a WDTV and current rip MKVs with the default profile and then use handbrake to convert it to a m4v for use on the WDTV. Wondering if this new profile aids that process in some way.

As explained in the Revision history:

Added ability to produce MKV files with compressed tracks (WDTV profile)

WDTV needs compressed PGS subs, otherwise they won't get displayed.
