MakeMKV doesn't work without AnyDVD?

If I have AnyDVD HD running, MakeMKV seems to work, even though I get a message saying that I should shut down AnyDVD. However, if I start MakeMKV without AnyDVD HD running, MakeMKV can not load the Blu-Ray disc. I get the following error messages:
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:44A0' occurred while SCSI command A40..002005402 to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom0'
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE- KEY NOT ESTABLISHED...

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I also had other error messages before installing AnyDVD HD, like:
"Scsi error - UNIT ATTENTION:POWER ON, RESET, OR BUS DEVICE RESET OCCURRED"
there was also some error message about 'Error OS'

MakeMKV doesn't need AnyDVD running, period. If it is, it will interfere with things like BD processing.

When I see the error you've posted, it's because the BD drive has decided to lock itself down. Usually, closing MakeMKV (and bring up the task manager to make sure the command line part exits, kill it if it hasn't) and bringing it back up will get the BD drive operational again. If I don't, MakeMKV will continue to get the hardware error, whether I'm trying to rip DVDs or BDs.

If I disable all startup items in msconfig, incl. anti-virus and AnyDVD, and reboot, MakeMKV will give me those error messages when trying to read a Blu-Ray Disc (DVDs seem to work fine). However, if I start AnyDVD HD, Make MKV will suddenly read the disc and rip it. The MKV files seem to play fine as well.

Also, I downloaded PowerDVD 11, and it does not play Blu-Rays either. If AnyDVD is not running, I get a message saying that I need to update PowerDVD to continue playback of this content. After the update, it loads the Blu-Ray Disc and takes me to the 'Restart' or 'Resume' menu. However, the movie doesn't start to play, and I am just asked the same question about updating again. However, if AnyDVD is running, I don't get the update question and the disc loads. However, it seems to freeze as soon as it starts playback.

As far as I can guess, it seems like MakeMKV and PowerDVD are not getting the proper HDCP messages from the drive or something. As with AnyDVD HD running, which removes the copy protection, the Blu-Ray discs are suddenly available for MakeMKV and PowerDVD?

Hi!

1) What version number of MakeMKV are you using?

2) What is the brand and model number of your PC's Blu-ray reader/burner? Is it one of the drives noted in the thread captioned "AACS bus encryption" in the "Blu-ray errors" sub-forum here?

3) Are you having this problem with only one specific original, commercial Blu-ray disc, or all Blu-ray discs?

I would check to see if there's a firmware update available for your drive. That'd be my guess.

I'm using MakeMKV 1.6.14 and have the same problem with all commercial Blu-Ray discs. The LG GGC-H20L Optical drive has the latest firmware. Though it was not listed in the "AACS bus encryption" thread, pratman2 said the following about the same drive:

"I have a two and a half year old LG GGC-H20L, and about 2-3 months ago I started getting the same error messages. I have not updated the firmware on the drive since I bought it, and I have not updated windows in probably 8 months. I'm not so sure it's only a few recent drives the manufacturers have put out that are having this AACS encryption problem."

So clearly someone else have the same problem with the same drive. But the other user said that MakeMKV used to work with the drive and then just stopped.

Where can I check if my drive has Bus Encryption?

This is a buggy drive, and workaround certainly can be added. Please enable and post full debug log for analysis.
