After a few months break and a change of laptop (2020 Intel MacBook Pro to 2024 M4 MacBook Pro due to storage issues) whenever I open Makemkv I keep receiving the error but it does open albeit it has limited function and it doesn't recognise my external drive.

Is it the computer OS or is it caused by something within Makemkv?

What version of MakeMKV are you using?

In MacOS 15.4, something changed in MacOS which caused MakeMKV to crash consistently. It is fixed in version 1.18.1 of MakeMKV.

Or maybe you need to tell Gatekeeper to allow MakeMKV on your new MacBook Pro. Gatekeeper in macOS X 15 Sequoia

The version I have is 1.17.8. Just refresh my memory please how can I update to the latest version while retaining my license purchase I made back last year?

On your Mac, in MakeMKV, you can click on Help -> Register and see your license key and make a copy of it for safe keeping. Also, presumably, you still have the email from last year with your license key.

When you download MakeMKV, you'll get a .dmg file. When you click on that and mount it, you'll 'install' MakeMKV.app by dragging it to your Applications folder; aka old-school Mac app management. All your other settings will be preserved since they live in files that are in the Library folder. Other than Apple's Gatekeeper getting in your way, installing a new version of MakeMKV should be painless.

Thanks, appreciate it. Apart from telling Gatekeeper that Makemkv is not a threat to the laptop the application immediately worked without issue and even remembered the license key. I'll just attempt to solve the AACS issue with the integration with VLC.
