Strangely I've just loaded MakeMKV to another laptop using Windows 10
I just installed VLC
but running makemkv backup on the external drive with a bluray just stops after it hit 12 read errors.
Oddly as well the m2ts files that were created don't play on VLC.
I'm not sure why. The desktop plays backed up m2ts files on VLC no problems. Maybe I'm missing a component or something. There's a few things going on here that maybe someone can help me out with.

Decrypt? Come to think of it. I don't see that option. Where is that? Could be I need to re-install using administrator priviliges?
Anyway, I tried creating an MKV and it says it completed but there's no video created.

Re: m2ts files from backup not playing on vlc
Ok. mkv was created I was looking in the wrong folder.
But with the backup the m2ts files won't play in vlc. So I'm guessing they are encrypted. I do notice an extra file in the backup discatt.dat which I've never seen before so I'm guess it's en encrypted backup. However in this version I never came across the option to always decrypt which I know used to be there - it could be the way I installed makemkv without administrator priviliges?
With that note, I have to start makemkv with run as administrator or it won't recognize my external bluray drive.

ok regarding the discatt.dat the new makemkv is putting it in a different spot than the older one. ok
But still stuck on why the m2ts files won't play in vlc.

when your doing a backup there is decrypt check box
doing a mkv its always decrypted
the only time you should get m2ts files is from a backup your jumping around here in the methods...

Ok. I don't see the checkbox do I need to re-install ?
Re: m2ts files from backup not playing on vlc
After you select the backup option, the checkbox is on the same screen as where you select the location for the backup to be saved.christopher2222 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 29, 2025 1:33 pmOk. I don't see the checkbox do I need to re-install ?

Thanks! I can't believe I missed that.
The other issue is the scratches are preventing the external bluray from doing a whole backup. The desktop drive can plow through.

Sorry. You don't understand. Your external Verbatim is far better regarding error correction but it's underpowered. You need to connect it to USB-C or use a powered USB hub. And you need to make you more familiar with the ripping options.christopher2222 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 29, 2025 1:51 pmThanks! I can't believe I missed that.

It has external power, into a plug so I can't see how or why it would be underpowered. I also tried plugging both usb's on the usb cord in as well as plugged into the wall but it still stopped.
In general it seems portable drives, whether plugged into a wall socket or not, are less powerful than their desktop counterparts. Better error correction or not, like you said underpowered, a scratch that is ok on a desktop drive will defeat a portable one.
