How Do I Fix the Black Bars and Black Screen Issue with MKV Files?

Hi everyone,

I have been working on transferring all my DVDs to my computer to use with Plex. Most of the DVDs have ripped fine using MakeMKV, but a few have come out with issues. Some files are super small, surrounded by black bars on all sides. The resolution says 720x480, but the video itself appears tiny.

On top of that, when playing these MKV files on certain devices, I sometimes get a black screen for a few seconds before playback starts. I have tried fixing the aspect ratio and resolution with MKVToolNix, but all it does is make the black bars larger or stretch the video awkwardly. I also tried HandBrake and VidCoder but had no luck.

I don’t want to lose the options for multiple audio tracks and subtitles in the MKV format. Is this an issue with the DVDs, or am I missing something in MakeMKV or another tool? Any advice on removing the black bars and fixing the black screen would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

handbrake will strip black bars during an encode. There are other tools, but this one is what I use. The others you mention do not "strip" the bars, really.
