Hi,
I have been using Windows for many years and have just in the last week assembled a PC for migrating myself away from Windows to Linux.
I have a large collection of Bluray and DVDs that I'd like to add to a NAS/Media server in the future so one of my first taks in Linux is getting the hang of Makemkv.
I've installed the most recent version of Makemkv and followed the instructions on this forum.
On opening Makemkv it does show my source drive (ASUS BW-16D1HT) and the File menu options are available. I also have added the most recent trial version key.
When I insert a DVD it says 'Disc is being loaded' and I can hear disc activity from the drive, however it just stays on this message and the File menu option items are 'ghosted' out.
It isn't a disc problem as I can view the film on this machine with VLC perfectly and I can view the folders/files on the discs, I've tried numerous DVDs and Blu-Rays all with the same problem.
I have tried inserting the disc before opening Makemkv and same issue. Numerous reboots. OS updates are all installed. I've tried running Makemkv from the terminal and from the menu.
I have trawled through this forum and search engines for the past few days to no avail, if someone could possibly point my in the right direction? that would be greatly appreciated.
OS: Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon
Optical drive: ASUS BW-16D1HT
Linux Mint - Can view DVDs / BluRays in VLC but Makemkv freezes cannot read the discs
Re: Linux Mint - Can view DVDs / BluRays in VLC but Makemkv freezes cannot read the discs
I am running Linux Mint 6.1.0-31 with MakeMKV 1.17.8 and also have this problem (ASUS BW-16D1XU) with an external Blu-Ray player on USB3. I have an internal DVD-RW (Samsung badged TSST-Corp CDDVDW SH-224FB) on SATA and I can rip DVDs just fine, but using the Blu-Ray player MakeMKV just sits there and says "please wait". I have used MakeMKV in the past on Windows 10 x64 with exactly the same drives with no issues whatsoever.
I tried this as a fix, after like you trawling through the forum for ages looking for anything to indicate that this problem had been solved:

It did not work. In fact, when I did this, no inserted discs ended up showing in the Mint GUI. If you try it, make a copy of the file to be edited (I did!). If you use Mint like I do, the default text editor is called "xed", not "vim", so change the command line. Like I said, it didn't work for me.
Your post has now had over 1,000 views. Is there nobody that can help with this please?
I don't mind having a look myself, and am fairly techy (a long time ago I was an AIX admin, but not for 20 years or so; I am a civil engineer, not exactly similar disciplines!) Could the problem be:
1. The drive firmware - can this be updated?
2. The way Mint talks to USB devices - is there a configuration file that can be changed?
3. A bug in MakeMKV - is there a log file or a way to run MakeMKV in verbose mode?
4. Regarding the link above, there is a file called "70-persistent-storage.rules", but it contains no text. Should it?
Thanks in advance for any help!
I'm having a bit of a weekend of this because I need to do some work to my Volvo & my VIDA Windows laptop registry has somehow become corrupt. I can't talk to the car now. Ho hum.....
