[FIX] Windows 11 -- Can't find any usable optical drive

Post by intelligo »

Recently, in Windows 11 my Pioneer BDR-209M drive was no longer being found by MakeMKV, as well as VLC. MakeMKV gave me the message, "Can't find any usable optical drive". After reinstalling drivers, reseating SATA cables, and other troubleshooting, I had just about concluded that I needed to buy a new drive. Luckily, before purchasing, I stumbled across a post elsewhere (link below) that cleared up the problem entirely. From the post, “This error is due to a Windows security policy (that is locally enforced by default…)." One must disable the security policy preventing access to the optical drive. The procedure for a Windows computer:
  • Open Control Panel and search for “policy“
  • Click “Edit group policy” (requires administrator privileges). This opens the Local Group Policy Editor.
  • In the tree in the left-hand pane, click through

    Code: Select all

Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
  • In the right-hand pane, double-click the policy for:

    Code: Select all

Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only
  • Set the policy to Disable, then Apply
  • Close the Local Group Policy Editor and restart your computer
