how dose makemkv work? i noticed there aren't any settings that need to be done. are they all automatic? how big dose it take the movie down to?

There are some setting in menu. As for conversion, makemkv just repackages original disc content into MKV container - it does not recompress video or audio so the MKV size will be roughly equal to the source size.
