MakeMVK on Windows fails vs other OSes

Post by oden007 »

I seem to be having issues using MakeMKV on Windows, it keeps failing to copy. I have plugged the drive into two usb ports (on the motherboard, not a USB hub) at the same time to make sure it receives adequate power (also tried with just one USB connected and it seems to run the drive fine). It keeps happening multiple times even for other disks, sometimes one or two manage to successfully copy but there are always failures for TV series on Blu-ray.

I get this failure for all the titles on the drive:

Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading 'BDMV/STREAM/00052.m2ts' at offset '0'

Is there a way to fix this or is anyone else having these issues on Windows 11? I have had similar things happen when I was on Windows 10.

I also have a Mac mini and it seems to be able to perform the copies successfully, although there are quirks when using it like having to turn off the drive and turn it back on but it seems to have a high success rate than on Windows, I am getting loads of fails.

I was wondering if Linux users have these issues too as I am looking to replace my old Mac mini with a DIY Linux build but I’m reluctant to do that if I’m going to have these problems and will have to bite the bullet and buy an Mac mini with soldered storage. Please note his post is not intended to start a flame war, these are just tools in the end.

Billycar11 is almost assuredly correct. I personally like Plugable USB hubs like this one: https://plugable.com/products/usb3-hub7c

To answer your question, folks on every platform have had problems like you describe. For USB powered drives, MakeMKV can spin the disc so fast it runs the drive out of power if it isn't connected to powerful USB ports. As you've discovered most Macs have high powered USB ports on the computer, but if the drive is plugged into a hub, it really depends on the hub. For Linux and Windows systems, the variety of hardware means almost anything is possible (or impossible). Often the easiest answer is to point folks to known high quality USB hubs. The operating system has almost nothing to do with it. The amount of power provided on the USB ports you're using is the culprit.
