Getting Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:MEDIUM NOT PRESENT - TRAY OPEN' error after 40 minutes of reading with no problem

Post by geogan »

Trying to rip my new UHD Venom disc... all going well until 40 mins into it... then it popped out and then MakeMKV barfed looking for disc.

Why does the external Libredrive-enabled BU40N drive eject the disc in the middle of reading disc??

This is not the first time it has done this!

It got about 40 minutes into reading Venom (2018) 4K disc which is about 55GB and then failed. Total PITA having to start again from start.

I wish the program had some sort of a "resume" feature so it didn't have to start again reading the previous 30+GB of data again - surely it would be easy to find last point written to the file on computer that failed and start reading the disc again from same place?

The "Program reads data faster than it can write to disk" is maybe network congestion? - MakeMKV writes from local workstation PC (Ryzen 5950X) to movie server over 1GB Ethernet LAN connection.

EDIT: It worked without errors the second time after 1:03:33 - don't know what is causing this kind of randomness with this drive.

The "Program reads data faster than it can write to disk" is maybe network congestion? - MakeMKV writes from local workstation PC (Ryzen 5950X) to movie server over 1GB Ethernet LAN connection.
Have you tried writing to local storage? I think there are people on this forum that write to network storage from their optical media, but I rarely see logs with that 'reads data faster than it can write to disk' message. Over a 1Gb connection I wouldn't expect to see that when reading from the optical drive. Writing to local storage should eliminate this variable from your setup.

By the time MakeMKV prints the tray open message in the log, things have already gone wrong.

I get this warning all the time. In my case, the bottleneck is not the network connection; rather, it's actually the HDD write speed at the server end. I have a RAID 5 volume constructed of WD Red Pros storing my data. The RAID controller overhead (from calculating parity data) is actually high enough to trigger this warning, so even local rips directly on the server trigger the message. I could eliminate the issue by introducing SSD caching, but that's a project for another day and a bigger budget since the warning is pretty harmless. In the meantime, it is still far more convenient for me to rip from my desktop over the network than locally from the server.

That's sorta amazing. Personally, I run a software based RAID 5 on my desktop computer. There is some overhead calculating parity for writes, but it is barely noticeable on my computer from 2017. That 4 disk volume sustains reads and writes of 400+MB/s (when I'm not thrashing it with multiple reads & writes at once), but it is only used for storing my rips. Perhaps the volume you're writing to is busy with other workloads as well. Lots of seek time on rotational media can really impact throughput.

In any case, I was thinking you would run MakeMKV on your 'client' computer and store the output on that computer instead of on the network. Running MakeMKV on your server would undoubtedly be inconvenient. In the end, it doesn't matter since it worked for you the second time.
