How do I play UHD discs?

Post by grandpixel »

I'm in the process of ripping my library with MakeMKV. When I come to a disc that has more than one playlist, I use PowerDVD and Process Monitor to try and figure out the correct one. But with UHD discs, PowerDVD always says Intel SGX is required, but I'm on an AMD system, and SGX is strictly for Intel systems. From what I hear, SGX is poor technology that will go away, and that it's not required to play UHD discs, but just something that CyberLink did. But I can't find a solution to play the discs.

Is there another way I can play UHD discs and find the playlist with Process Monitor? Will VLC Player do it? Is there another player? Any help appreciated.

You can playback UHD with MPC-HC, MPC-BE or Potplayer.

In MakeMKV you have to select "system" in the integration tab.

You need to set your player up to use an External Filter like Lavfilters for the video, audio and splitters.

In Lavfilters you have to set hardware decoder as D3D11 or you won't get HDR.

You will need to use MadVr or MPC video renderer or Potplayer's internal DX11 video renderer and output in HDR with 10-bit colour.
