New Here External Hard Drive Issue

I hope I’m not asking something that’s been asked before. But I downloaded MakeMkv and I just got an external Blu ray drive to rip a couple of movies. Now I can’t seem to get MakeMkv to read from the external hard drive.
Is there a quick fix for this?

USB drive?
USB provides power to devices, but only a limited amount. If you use a non-powered USB hub, that limited amount gets shared between all devices. USB-powered hard drives eat a lot of that. USB-powered optical drives eat a lot of that. Use both at one, and things start to fail in "mysterious ways".

Does it see the Blu ray drive? I use one for my blu rays and it works great. Click on the drive drop down box and see if it shows up there. I have to do that to mine sometimes but has always worked.
