The disc access layer was updated in MakeMKV v1.6.4 . We did extensive testing on all 3 OSes and observed about 3x increase in disc read speed versus 1.6.3 . However, some users experienced a drop in disc read speed. This is the main topic to discuss the new IO code. Please reply with following information:

• Did it became faster or slower? How much?
• What OS are you using, and on what architecture (32 or 64 bit)
• For Windows, please indicate whether you have a 3rd party UDF driver or on the fly decryption software installed
• For Mac please indicate whether DASPI is turned on
• What drive do you use and how it is attached (internal or external)
• Did you test DVD or blu-ray disc

Generally, new version should be a little bit slower at start of each title but significantly faster overall. Make sure your voice is heard if this is not the case. The last version with old IO code, 1.6.3 may be downloaded at http://www.makemkv.com/download/old

I did notice an appreciable speed increase running .4 over .3, but unfortunately I have not had a completed rip with the latest version. The discs both moved quite quickly to roughly 35% completion, then failed (and I retried several times). Rolling back to .3 gave me successful rips of the same discs.

Just upgraded to 1.6.4 and am having significant speed issues. DVD rips are taking 60-90 minutes.

Also, makemkvcon.exe memory usage is sky-rocketing, and the application will not exit cleanly.

I noticed that sometimes MakeMKV's reported read rate was as high as 10x, then it might immediately drop to 4.5x. As these DVD discs are in pristine/original condition, my guess is that the change in reported read speeds is not related to the DVD disc's condition or even MakeMKV, but is really based upon the selected video-data's physical track location on the disc (the outer DVD tracks are read in at a higher rate [more data per revolution] at the given disc speed resulting in the "faster" read rates). Bottom-line; any reported/perceived speed/thru-put differences must be measured as the application's overall save/copy time for the selected title on a given DVD disc.

CPU utilization on 1.6.4 was usually between 14-8%, with stable memory utilization.

I'm happy with the 1.6.4 tweak, curious why it seems to only favor/improve the SATA based I/O...

I am using Windows Home Server(32) with a UDF driver I think from an add in called "my movies"
I use an external usb drive Asus SBC-06D1S-U/DBLU

SLOW Slow Slow.

I wondered what was wrong with my computer...
Then realized the software was different.

Experienceing about a 75% REDUCTION in speed.

Setup:
Windows XP PRO SP3 32 bit
Intel I7 in a Gigabyte MLB
4GB RAM
Internal 20x DVD-RW Liteon
Speeds before ranged from 4-8X
Now seeing 1-1.8
Looking at an hour plus to rip
a single regular DVD.

No UDF drivers installed by me.

Slower speeds, PC hanging now during rips when it never has before upgrading.

Same here.... 1.6.4.... Sloooooow! Went back to 1.6.3.

I had previously used MediaCodeSpeedEdit to modify the firmware for my LG CH10LS20 to enable higher ripping speeds. After 1.6.4 was released i restored my original firmware so that i could see if the new version had overcome the speed limiting issues. Unfortunately, 1.6.4 with the original drive firmware is much slower than i had using a modified firmware and 1.6.4. With my modified firmware i could get between 4X and 6X. With the original firmware and 1.6.3 i hover between 2X and 3X.

I have the exact same drives as you and had to apply original firmware with riplock in place to make 1.6.4 work reliably. I still get better rates than you though; 3-4.5X with 1.6.4 and unmodified 1.00-03 firmware.

I got the same issues with my LG HDDVD combo drive too; it seems the faster ripping of 1.6.4 upsets quite alot of drives, is it only LG and TSSTCorp that affected?
