How do I rip a tv show dvd where I get it separated by episode?

searching here for "individual episodes" or "separate episodes" finds a lot of hits, like
this one, which cover a number of methods. Needless to say, it depends on how the disk was authored, and what post-rip processing tool(s) you want to use.
I use handbrake, because I'm also reducing the size of the video files, but tools like mkvtoolnix are faster because they don't change the video... they just hack it into smaller chunks.

It is quite rare for me to find a TV show that doesn't already have separate files for each episode. I can only think of one case where I had to split by chapter, and I don't even remember what that was now. Out of curiosity, what TV show(s) are you trying to convert?

The just-released s-CRY-ed set has 13 episodes per file... Fortunately, they're all 6 chapters long, so it's easy enough to split into individual episodes on chapter markers.
