Its always random, anti-virus software always have some false positives.

Here is the way to check for yourself:

1. Open download page https://www.makemkv.com/download/ , from link open the hash file, for this release - https://www.makemkv.com/download/makemkv-sha-1.16.1.txt

1a (If you are really paranoid, and know about GPG and digital signatures). Verify the above-mentioned hash file.

2. Upload the MakeMKV setup file to virustotal - https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/86c ... /detection

3. Check the file hash, in this case the string "86c76877d3441603d79af576bcc8923033598aebe393a79bae6ab621a558d067" - it should be the same in MakeMKV hash file, and in virustotal output. If it is, then you have an unaltered installer from makemkv.com , otherwise you've got a virus.

4. Look at the virustotal output. If you see a lot of red, do not install. Don't make a decisions on personal trust, use computer algorithms :)

The screenshot you posted says it all. Windows doesn't know the program and then it went in full alert mode to scare you. The message is ridiculous.
