Read Rate or Rip Speed

MakeMKV seems to max out the read rate around 2X. I've tested this with an LG GGC-H20L and a Pioneer BDR-206. I'm testing on a fairly quick system (i7-950 & 6GB of RAM). Below I'm testing showing stats from the Pioneer drive which I'm almost certain isn't ripped locked. Around the two minute mark I'm getting near 6X with AnyDVD while MakeMKV never gets much over 2X. AnyDVD can get up to around 8X near the end with some discs, while MakeMKV seems to slow down to the 1.5-1.8X range over time. I think MakeMKV is a great piece of software and I only compare it to AnyDVD to show that I believe my equipment is capable of going faster. I'm wondering if there is anyway to get my speed up using MakeMKV.

Thank you for posting this - MakeMKV should be at least as fast as any other software, including AnyDVD. I would ask you to do following tests:

1. Go to preferences and set read buffer size to 2 GB.
2. Try to make an full disc backup with MakeMKV without selecting "decrypt video files" and note the speed.
3. Try to make an full disc backup with MakeMKV while selecting "decrypt video files" and note the speed.
4. Try to see if 2GB buffer makes any difference.

These tests should help to determine the problem. Also do you use 32-bit or 64-bt OS?

Mike: The drive is riplocked, my LG was locked at ~2x as well until i used a patched (media-code-speed-edit) firmware. For some reason Anydvd bypass riplock but makemkv does not :3

".... For some reason Anydvd bypass riplock but makemkv does not :3...."

I also have a modified firmware on my Liteon I-HES208 that avoids the firmware riplock. And...like yourself..I found that AnyDVD seemed to utilize the unlocked the rip speed....but not MakeMKV. However, what I discovered....You're probably (like my setting) using the "full speed ahead" setting on AnyDVD's Drive setting, i.e., "Fast & Noisey". To maintain that full speed ahead rip speed in MakeMKV what I do is the following: Start AnyDVD when you insert your disc in the drive...let it do its thing. Then...CLOSE AnyDVD. Now, start the MakeMKV app. You'll find that you have full unlocked rip speed. At least I do...works every time. (Eg: a 22Gb BD in 15 minutes, a 36 Gb BD {Kill Bill II} in 22 minuites !)

I also just got a new pioneer bdr-206 and it's ripping at max 2X, did you find a way to unlock the drive?

According to my searches, the previous version bdr-205 didn't have a riplock, I'm disappointed to find that it's not the case with bdr-206.

I use Linux but I could boot in Windows if needed to unlock the drive.

Let me know if anybody has the same experience with the new bdr-206.

mike: I tried ripping with each of your suggestions. There wasn't any notable different between any of them. It bounce around the 2.3x to 2.4x speed. I'm running on 64-bit Windows. I'm still trying to verify the BDR-206 doesn't have a rip-lock firmware, I'll post back when I know more. I'm going to try to test with a BDR-205 that isn't rip-locked according to the Pioneer specifications. Also note I have never got AnyDVD to go very fast either. Only the combination of AnyDVD with ImgBurn allows me to rip at full speed.

philnort: that didn't seem to help. I had never adjusted that setting in AnyDVD. I assume you are referring to this one:

onyx3000: I'm not convinced the BDR-206 drive has rip-lock enabled. As you can see from my first picture above, that disc is being ripped at 5.7x at the two minute mark.

According to this post http://club.myce.com/f87/pioneer-bdr-20 ... ck-318810/. The BDR-206 does not have riplock.

It's confirmed that in some cases MakeMKV could have a slow read speed. Will be fixed in a next version.

Here I used MakeMKV on an ISO created with AnyDVD. Speed is very fast.

Can't wait to test new version when you get it ready. Thanks!

For even faster reading/ripping, DON'T mount the .ISO - just load it directly into MakeMKV ;>} Just make sure thye source .ISO is on a different drive than the destination folder...

Interesting. It's the same on my Hackintosh with both the Mac version of MakeMKV and the competing Mac software too (Blu Ray Ripper Pro, which doesn't show the speed but it's obvious from the ETA that it's doing the same). 2.8x-3.2x for ROMs, and about 3.6x pre decrypted BD-Rs (re-ripping a copy). Pretty slow for a drive that supposedly doesn't have riplock - maybe it has a more covert alternative?

It's not the hard drive, I'm ripping to an Intel SATA SSD which is capable of some ridiculous throughput.

Mine is also a BDR-205 which came highly recommended at myce and I thought it'd be worth the ?20 over the LG drives :(

This has worked for me with two movies.

Please try latest version, 1.6.4. and see if it makes any difference.

My apologies for reviving an old thread. I just purchased the BDR-206 and am experiencing similar problems to those above, but not exactly. I do not have AnyDVD installed but use makemkv for all of my ripping and decrypting. Currently using BETA 1.65 and FW 1.05.

I have ripped 4 Blu-ray movies (Braveheart, Casino, Goodfellas, Harry Potter) and a few seasons of south park. All went ok without errors. However the blu-rays never saw above a 4X read speed. Usually they would hover between 2.0-3.0X. The DVD's were hit and miss for speeds. For example Season 3 Disc 1 could only rip at 2X, but Season 3 Discs 2&3 could rip at 12X.

Overall I am a big fan of the program and am thankful for the effort put forth towards resolving these issues. Obviously I'd like to rip a blu-ray in 15 minutes rather than an hour if possible. If there are any more recent fixes that may help me please point me to them. Thanks!

I've always experienced very very slow rip speeds wsith Makemkv (about 2.5 hours for a movie). So ever since my first couple times trying this software I used anydvdhd exclusively. With anydvdhd I can rip a bd in about 19 minutes.

I had just assumed that makemkv was a slow program. Then I looked online and saw people actually using it at decent speeds. So here I am trying it again with the same results. Movie is only 17gb and its taking two and half hours to rip. I'm using 1.6.5.

I have a GGC-H20L drive. My computer itself has 3gb of ram running on a q6600 processor under winxp pro. Anydvdhd runs fine at fast speeds. I've tried a couple different things to try and improve read speads. I've set read buffer size to 2gb. I've even used mediacodespeededit to update the firmware with "increase read speed" and no luck. I still have really really slow rip speeds. Nothing has changed. My read speed is still at .5x, that's 2.4mb/s.
